IN LOVING MEMORY OF
MARY ELIZABETH LUCAS
Mary Elizabeth Lucas, born on September 8, 1944, to the late Agnes and William Prince in Sumter, South Carolina, departed peacefully on October 14, 2024. Mary was the eldest of nine siblings and embodied kindness and gentle strength all her life.
After completing Eastern High School in South Carolina, Mary pursued further studies at South State University. Later, in search of new opportunities, the family moved to New York City. There she met and married the love of her life, Douglas Lucas. Together they built a beautiful life, welcoming their children Tonel and Tosha into the world.
Mary was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who took immense pride in her family. Her grandchildren, Cassandra, Tonel, and Tosha, and was truly the best friend her grandchildren could have asked for. “YaYa,” as they knew her, was the constant source of comfort in their lives. Grandmama Mary counseled, laughed, and prayed for her family with her wise and loving words. The memories made together will never fade.
Mary’s vast knowledge of everything from sports, entertainment, and politics made her a wellspring of wisdom. The going joke was that if someone didn’t know something, all you would have to do was “Ask Mary.” Her wealth of knowledge was only surpassed by the wisdom she possessed in her beautiful mind.

Mary brought peace and fun and her spirit will live on forever in the lives she touched.
Her memory is cherished by her beloved children and their spouses: Cassandra Thomas (Chris Thomas), Tonel Lucas, Tosha Lucas (Jamal Gittens); brothers Prince Jr. (Beverly), William Prince (Lena); sisters, Pamela Gittens (Jamal), Queenie Lucas, and a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, as well as other relatives and loved ones.

Though she is no longer with us in her spirit, laughter, and love will forever remain beside us every day.
“Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day.”
