Rachel Louise Tew was born on November 10, 1944, in Winston, North Carolina to the late James and Lillie Pearl Tew. On Sunday, August 3rd, 2025, God called His angel Rachel home.
Rachel moved to New York from North Carolina at a very early age. Rachel’s educational background stemmed in New York and led her to working for the NYC Board of Education for many years, including other various jobs. But her passion was activism for the youth and community. She was very strong-willed and serious when it came to showing and giving something different for the youth and the community, and she did not back down.
But her proudest moment and showmanship of what can be seen was just heard in her garden. She continued to still work and push until it became too much due to her health. But she didn’t let any medical status stop her. Rachel was still and always been a lovable, strong-willed, and dedicated person from the heart. And definitely a jokester.
Beside her physical work, she also enjoyed riding her bike, watching her sports, and last but not least, her music and dancing. She did not stop moving and grooving. Only God paused her movement, which she didn’t mind, because her faith was always substantial. But her presence will remain. She’s one of a kind.
Rachel preceded in death by her parents, brother, and family-like neighbors of building 35-37 129th St. Rachel leaves to cherish her memories. Her family, which include her Godchildren Ronald, Tania, JJ, Booney, and her baby Shay Shay. Her HHA’s: Doreen, Ayanna, Caslyn, Vanessa, Kendra, Sharon, Serita, Ann, and Dalisa. In addition to, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and the neighborhood.
