Ridel “Des” Leopold Cross, departed this life leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and dedication. Born on November 23, 1953, in Montego Bay, Jamaica, Des was the second of seven children to Donty Cross and Dulcy Shaw, both of whom predeceased him.
Before immigrating to the United States, Des became a father to three children: Leonie, Melvalyn (who predeceased him), and Amary. On July 31, 1974, he moved to New York, where he would later meet and marry Paulette Erskine on November 24, 1976. Together, they built a life filled with love and devotion, raising their two children, Victoria and Ridel Jr. Des also embraced Paulette’s two children, Christopher and Tunikia, as his own.
Known for his infectious spirit and love of dancing, Des was the life of every gathering, always bringing joy to those around him. His skilled hands earned him the reputation of “Mr. Fix It,” capable of repairing cars, building fences, and tackling any challenge with determination. He never hesitated to travel great distances to lend a helping hand, making trips to Virginia and Florida to assist family and friends with home repairs. His creativity shone through his lifelong love of carving, crafting intricate animals, faces, and canes with great artistry.
Des worked in various industries throughout his life, including the meat industry, restaurant work, and masonry while in Jamaica. As an avid outdoorsman, he found peace in fishing, spending countless hours on Florida’s shoreline, relishing the calm of the sea.
He leaves behind a loving family, including his devoted wife, his three children, his stepchildren, fifteen cherished grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; six beloved siblings and their spouses/significant others, and a vast extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Des’s legacy of kindness, craftsmanship, and unwavering love will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew him. Though he is gone, his spirit will continue to shine in the lives he touched.
Rest in eternal peace, Des. You will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
