(The loss of another community leader and friend) A Community Dream: The Boys & Girls Club of the Pee Dee Many years ago, I had the opportunity to meet Bishop Eugene Campbell through the late Rev. Frankie D. Thomas, former pastor of Manning Baptist Church. At that time, I had a vision and a dream: I wanted to establish a Boys & Girls Club of the Pee Dee in Dillon, South Carolina, providing a safe and positive place for our young people to learn, grow, develop, and become productive citizens. Manning Baptist Church became our meeting place, and what began as a vision quickly became a community effort. I remember the excitement, the enthusiasm, and the tremendous support that surrounded this project. Community leaders came together because they believed in the possibilities for our children and our community. There were five individuals who stood with me throughout the process, every step of the way: Bishop Eugene Campbell The late Rev. Frankie D. Thomas Rev. Delen McCrae My mother, the late Mrs. Bertha McCall Davis Rev. Trayfer "Smoky" Monroe Their support, encouragement, prayers, time, and commitment meant so much to me. They were there for the meetings, the discussions, the planning, and the vision. I will never forget their dedication. There were also many other wonderful people who became trailblazers and encouragers in this effort, including my aunt, Mrs. Brenda McCall Robinson; Ms. Val Graves; Councilman Tim Cousar; Mr. Johnny Campbell; my cousin, the late Johnny Moore; and Mrs. Catherine Fields. Mrs. Catherine Fields was especially supportive. She even offered property that she owned as a possible location for the Boys & Girls Club. However, we knew that obtaining property was only one part of the dream. We needed the resources, funding, staffing, programs, and long-term support necessary not only to open the club, but to keep its doors open for the children and families who would depend on it. We eventually made the difficult decision not to move forward because the project would require continued financial support from the City. At that time, we were told that the City was not in a position to provide the ongoing funding that would have been necessary to sustain the organization. Although the Boys & Girls Club never became a reality at that time, the work, the meetings, the vision, and the commitment were very real. I will never forget the countless meetings, the energy, the time, the prayers, the ideas, and the tremendous effort that so many people poured into this dream. We were united by one purpose: to make a difference in the lives of our children and to make our community and society better. Sometimes a dream does not come to fruition in the way we originally envision it. But that does not mean the dream was wasted. The people who came together, the conversations that took place, and the desire to invest in our young people were all meaningful. Mr. Decar Brown from the B&G Club of Florence was excited and assisted us. We wanted Rev. Trayfer Monroe to be the Director for the Dillon facility. I remain grateful to every person who believed in the vision and contributed in any way. Some of those trailblazers are no longer with us, but their legacy of service, faith, leadership, and love for the community remains. To Bishop Eugene Campbell, the late Rev. Frankie D. Thomas, Rev. Delen McCrae, my late mother Mrs. Bertha McCall Davis, Rev. Trayfer "Smoky" Monroe, and all of the family members, community leaders, pastors, elected officials, friends, and supporters who stood beside us: Thank you. Thank you for believing. Thank you for showing up. Thank you for giving your time and energy. Thank you for caring about our children. And thank you for believing that our communities deserve opportunities to thrive. Blessings always to each of you. May the work we started years ago continue to inspire others to invest in our young people and in the betterment of our communities

The New St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church family acknowledges with deep sorrow the passing of Bishop Eugene Campbell, our beloved 2nd Vice Moderator of the Berea Association. Bishop Campbell served faithfully with integrity, compassion, and a steadfast commitment to the Kingdom of God. Though we grieve his earthly departure, we rejoice in the hope of eternal life and give thanks for his remarkable legacy of faith and service. We extend our sincere prayers and condolences to his family and all whose lives he impacted. May God provide comfort and sustain us during this season of loss.

May God grant you love, joy, peace, and comfort, as only He can, to help you through this difficult time in your life. I will remember you in prayer. So often we attach ourselves to the work of the ministry walking out on faith alone trusting God to lead us and direct us to that place where we find strength, and comfort we look for wisdom to discern the right path to choose. It is only by God's grace and mercy that we shall overcome we have the victory in Christ Jesus. My beloved father in the ministry God has saw fit to call you home we will miss you. But we have the comfort in knowing that a legacy of love will continue. Your work here is done! As you take your rest and receive your crown know that you touched so many lives and have prayed and preached the gospel many days and nights we conversed about the power of love and how God's grace and mercy have changed so many lives. God chose you to be an example to his people many are the testimony of your character and willingness to teach the message is edify and encourage God be praised for he is love let your light shine before men taste and see that the lord is good. As for me and my house we shall serve the lord.
