Deaconess Hattie Mae McCoy Owens was born in Dillon County, South Carolina to mother Hattie McCoy and the late Neal B. McCoy. She departed this earthly life on Sunday, October 14, 2018.
She attended the public schools in Dillon County, South Carolina and graduated from Gordon High School class of 1970.
Hattie Mae was employed at Russell Stover Candies, Inc. and later employed at AVM, Inc where she worked faithfully for forty-two years. She attended St. Matthew AME Church with her parents and siblings. As she grew older she attended St. Peter’s Way of the Cross in Mullins, South Carolina. She later moved her membership to Miracle Temple Family Fellowship where she served faithfully. Hattie was a pillar and a warrior to her church family; she served as head usher, the duty of serving communion and she was ordained as a deaconess where she served on the finance committee.
Hattie Mae was known to her immediate family, nieces, and nephews as “Aunt Dank.” She had a favorite saying to her family which was “Hey Ya’ll.” She was preceded in death by her father: Neal B. McCoy and three brothers: Neal C. McCoy, Jay C. McCoy and Willie Edward McCoy.
Hattie Mae leaves to cherish fond memories ~ her mother: Hattie McCoy; three brothers: Nathan (Bessie) McCoy of Lumberton, NC, Pastor King (Augustine) McCoy of Latta, SC and Andrew(Geneise) McCoy of Augusta, GA; four sisters: Velma Barkley of Charlotte, NC, Willie Bell (Elder Tommy) Pittman of Dillon, SC, Angie(William)Pittman of Greensboro, NC and Nancy McCoy of Dillon, SC; one aunt: Essie Blount of Dillon, SC and a host nieces, nephews, grand nieces, nephews, a special friend: Deaconess Sandra Walls, other relatives and friends.
