Mother Mary Elizabeth Williams Berry was born on September 1, 1934 in Dillon County, South Carolina to the late Willie and Emma McRae Williams. She was the fifth child of nine children. Mary was affectionately known as “Liz” to her family and friends. She transitioned to a new life on Sunday, March 22, 2020 at the home of her beloved daughter, Demetria E. Berry in Dillon, South Carolina.
Mary graduated from DCT- Latta High School, Latta, South Carolina. She later went to Scott’s Beauty School in Newark, New Jersey.
Liz worked for Johns Hopkins Hospital, AT&T Company, and was head cook for restaurants. Mary’s most passionate job was childcare. She helped raise and cared for many children. It seems like as soon as she sent one off to school she would get another child. Mommy kept all her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She had other children she cared for that became her grandchildren.
Mary “Liz” had a good sense of humor and did not mind setting you straight (rather it hurt or not). Sometimes it would be just what you needed to hear; oh, how she could make you laugh. Full of advise if you asked and sometimes if you didn’t.
Liz was our Natural Herb doctor and she stayed in her herb books. You could call her about any element and she could tell you what to take. She had so many home remedies and they really did work. Mary was always willing to help and sometimes offer others to help. She would talk her nieces all the way home on long trips.
Mary was preceded in death along with her parents ~ her husband: Lee David Berry; a daughter: Brenda D. Berry; her siblings: Willie “Bill” Williams, Louise Whittington, Emma May Peterson, Walter “Pete” Williams, Bertha Hodges and Fannie Horn.
Mother Mary leaves to cherish her loving memories ~ her children: Velvia Rolle, Demetria E. Berry, Lee David Berry Jr., Andre (Carla) Berry; her grandchildren: Monique S. Gardner, Natina N. Berry and Brionna C. Flowers; great grandchildren: Davon Berry, Daylon Gardner, Javon Jackson, Dupri Gardner and Sh’Kise Jackson; two siblings: Charles Williams and Norma Jean Braddy and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Bishop Freeman McLeod and the Bright Light church family are praying for you all. Wa are sending our sincere condolences to your family during this time. May God's comfort, strength, and peace be with you all.
Ms. Liz was one of the Aldine Street mothers in Newark, NJ who always had her door open. We knew we were welcome and there would be a warm and friendly face waiting. These will be some of the wonderful memories that will carry on forever. During this challenging time, we must celebrate the greatness of her life and remember the good times we all shared as family and friends. With love, Pamela (Thomas) Johnson
