Obituary For Mrs. Theresa B. Whitfield "Buddy"

Sunrise ~Theresa “Buddy” Bethea Whitfield was born on Sunday, March 21, 1937 in Dillon County, South Carolina to the late Ella “Dal” and Lee William Bethea.

Sunset ~ On Sunday, December 9, 2018, at the age of 81 and on her late sister, Lee Carolyn’s birthday, she entered into eternal rest at McLeod Hospice House in Florence, South Carolina.

Education/Vocation ~ Theresa graduated from Gordon High School, class of 1955. Then, she moved to Virginia with her aunt and took a few nursing courses. This indicated her passion for taking care of others. Afterwards, she was employed at Dixiana Mills and subsequently, operated her own daycare business. Young people of all ages gravitated toward her warm, maternal spirit.

Church ~ Theresa grew up as a member of St. Stephens United Methodist Church. Many years later, she was baptized at Little Pee Dee State Park.

Family ~ In 1967, Theresa married Kinnie Whitfield. She was a loving, devoted, wife and mother who ensured that all four daughters were prepared for the joys and challenges of life. Buddy, as she was affectionately called, never hesitated to help her family and friends and was a wonderful listener. Many of us came to her for advice. Theresa also had a bold, witty personally and did not hesitate to speak her mind. She enjoyed reading, completing puzzles, and listening to soul and gospel music.

She was preceded in death by her parents; devoted husband: Kinnie Whitfield; her brother: Willie Marshall Bethea and sister: Lee Carolyn Johnson whom she shared a special bond.

Theresa leaves to cherish fond memories ~ two sisters: Mary Jane Ringgold and Bettye McGriff both of Hempstead, NY; four daughters: Kim, Lynn (Geno), Tonya (Keith) and Crystal all of Dillon, SC; seven grandchildren: Kenya, De’Andre’, Kyle, Kenny, Kalia, Kalah and Destini; three great grandchildren: Aubrey, Cameron, Hunter; a beloved pet: Skittles; one special sister: Pat (James) Thomas; one special sister-n-law: Anna Graves; special sons and daughters: Linda Greene, Darreyl Walker, Vivion Williams, Greg Harley, Rev. Anthony Alford, Suzanne McLaurin and Sion Bell; two best friends: Lena Poitier and Hazel Stephens and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
