GEORGE HENRY WRIGHT, SR., a devoted husband and loving father was born in Dixie, Georgia (Brooks County) on August 7, 1940, to Deacon Weadom and Deaconess Pearlie Manning Wright. He was the fifth of twelve children.
During his childhood, George joined Beulah Hill Baptist Church with fond memories of singing in the choir. In 1961, he earned his high school diploma from his alma mater Washington Street High School in Brooks County. After graduation, George relocated to Miami for work and shortly after arrival he was proudly deployed to the United States Army Fort Jackson, South Carolina Reception Station where he took oath to forever be of service to his country. He received basic training at Fort Gordon military camp (presently known as Fort Eisenhower) in Augusta, GA and continued his specialized military training in engineering and demolition, which would earn him rank on the 588 Engineers Battalion.
In 1964 George continued military service in Fort Lee, VA and was assigned to the 135 Quartermaster Division until his end of term service (ETS) in 1965. After service, he returned to civilian life in Miami, Florida working for Miami-Dade Transit as a bus operator and studying at Florida Memorial University. There he would meet the love of his life Betty Joyce Hamilton. Joined by their union are six daughters and two sons. George eventually earned his degree from Florida Memorial University in Criminal Justice in 1973. He continued his service in Miami-Dade County, as a schoolteacher and administrator with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, a university police officer at Florida International University, and a training specialist and assistant to the Battalion Chief at Miami-Dade Fire Department. George's spirit of service to the South Florida community transcended from his career roles to his passion of auto mechanics.
George developed a reputation of genuineness and generosity by many; always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone he came in contact with. As proof of his character, he was affectionately known as "The Neighborhood Dad" in his community and was loved and adored by ALL. His children can attest to their dad's loving ways by recalling some of their core childhood memories, including Christmas Day bike rides with all the children in the neighborhood, building tree swing-sets for his daughters from simple materials and also teaching them to play tennis at Claude Pepper Park, Opa Locka.
With a love for various topics on science, history and the political spectrum, he instilled in all of his children the importance of having a well-rounded education and took pride in packing up a rental van and road-tripping each of them to their freshman year of college destinations. These efforts witnessed by his children instilled a sense of eternal pride and appreciation.
On Friday morning August 23, 2024, George earned his wings and transitioned to Heaven to join his parents Weadom and Pearlie, eight siblings: Lottie, Weadom Jr. "Bubba", Jimmie, Lucy, Pedro, Pearline, Willie Gerald “Jake" and Aristine.
