All the glory goes to God. On December 29, 2025, the Lord wrapped his loving arms around Mary and carried her home. “Mama Stokes” as she was affectionately called was born on October 31, 1938, to Jeffery Sam and Matilda Smith. She received Christ at an early age and was baptized. She attended the Brooks County School System. “Mama Stokes” was raised in Barney, Georgia but she spent most of her adult life in Miami, Florida. While residing in Miami she worked at the Veterans Hospital for 33 years. As “Mama Stokes” health began to fail she moved to Valdosta, Georgia in 2022.
“Mama Stokes” loved family, bingo, and always was prepared to take a nice cruise or flight.
Mary was a joy to our lives with a beautiful heart. Mary was married to the late Rufus Lee Stokes. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Matilda Smith, her brother Sam Smith Jr, and her sisters, Sallie Copeland and Velma Roundtree.
She leaves to mourn her passing: her loving children Sharon Stokes (Johnny), Gregory Stokes and daughter-in-law Annie Stokes. Her sisters and brother; Lille Thompson (JT), Diane Mobley (the late Hubert) and Edward Charles Smith (Cecelia). She also leaves to mourn 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and sorrowing friends.
“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”
