Dr. Susan “Suzie” Antonette Cashwell, age 62, of Wetumpka, Alabama, passed away peacefully on the morning of July 29, 2025.
Born on June 28, 1963, in Oscoda, MI, she was the daughter of the late Susan A. Touchton and Levin I. Touchton, Sr. Ever studious, she earned her Bachelor’s in Social Work from Northern Michigan University, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 1994. She later earned her Master’s in Social Work in 1995 and PHD in 1999 from Florida State University. Following this, she would proceed to work in private fields as a licensed social worker. In her more recent years, she worked in the educational field as a professor and in some cases administrator for Auburn University, Western Kentucky University, North Florida Community College, Saint Leo University, University of Massachusetts, and finally, as the Social Work Program Director and Associate Professor for Auburn University at Montgomery.
Dr. Suzie Cashwell was many things. She was a mother, a grandmother, a shepherd, a leader, but through all of these - an educator. In every aspect of her life - personal, professional, religious - she sought to teach and to guide. There are so many things that could be said about each role she’s taken - leading multiple church groups, offering advice as “Mama” and “Nana” and “Friend”, sharing her knowledge with not only her students - but everyone in her life.
Religion was a large part of her life, as a member of Union Baptist Church in Quitman, GA, and regularly attended and contributed to the Crossroads Community Church in Elmore, AL. One of her favorite scriptures was Matthew 25:40. It states, “[...]‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to the least of My brethren, you have done it unto Me.’” This is, perhaps, the most encompassing verse to speak to her character. She turned no one away, extended a hand, an ear, a word to all who needed it, and those who’d take her offer, hear her speak, would leave blessed.
Dr. Suzie Cashwell was preceded in death by her parents, Susan and Levin Touchton Sr., and her daughter, April Cashwell. She is survived by her brother: Levin (Monica) Touchton, Jr.; her daughters: Nicole (Andrew) Clayton and Naomi (Charles) Conger; her nephews, Anthony and Christopher Touchton; and her grandchildren: Tatianna Conger, Jeremy Cashwell, Andrew Clayton, Jr., and Zachary Clayton. She is also survived by all of those who were blessed to know her, as she viewed many as not only “friend” but “family”.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 8th, 2025, from 6:00PM - 7:00PM at BTW Funeral Home. A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held at 1:00PM on Saturday, August 9th, 2025, at Union Baptist Church in Quitman, GA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in the memory of Dr. Suzie Cashwell to a charity of your choosing.
