Obituary for Charles Johnson

ORANGEBURG, SC - On March 30, 2015 Charles H. Johnson, 83, brother of Wayman Johnson of Aiken passed away at home, 691 Bramble Ln., Orangeburg SC in the comforting arms of his loving family.

Born in Conway, SC, the third of five children of Wayman and Lila O. McKiever Johnson, he was very active in his church, his school, and his community. Mr. Johnson's educational accomplishments include elementary education in the public schools of Chester, SC, and a secondary education in the public schools of Orangeburg. He graduated in 1954 from SC State University with a BS degree and a Master of Science degree in Education. Upon graduation from college he entered the US Navy where he served his country for 91/2years. During his services he received many awards and recognitions for meritorious performance.

Mr. Johnson's career beyond the military spans thirty years in education and community service. He spent thirteen years in the public schools of SC, serving as Teacher/Principal of Matthews Elementary School, Dorchester County; and Assistant Administrator at Orangeburg - Wilkinson High School. Mr. Johnson spent nearly twenty years at Claflin University as Dean of Student Affairs. In this position he served admirably in a number of significant jobs to include Director of Public Relations, Director of Counseling and Placement, Director of Student Activities, and Chairperson of major committees.

One of his more notable accomplishments was that of successfully coordinating the ROTC Cross-Enrollment program with South Carolina State University. Numerous students have gone on to successful military careers as a result of Mr. Johnson's mentoring and passionate support of the program.

Mr. Johnson was noted for his civic activity and outstanding service to youth. Chief among these activities was his devotion to the Boy Scotts of America. He received much recognition for this and other civic participation to include Orangeburg Chamber of Commerce, Parent-Teacher-Student Association, Orangeburg Council on Aging, Palmetto Low Country Health Systems, Inc., Orangeburg United Way, and Orangeburg Area Development Center. He held life and general memberships in VFW, American Legion, National Wildlife Federation, US Navy League, American Counseling Association, and others. He is also listed in numerous Directors as a result of his outstanding service. For more than fifty years, he was a member of Omega Psi Phi, Fraternity, Inc. Epsilon Omega Chapter. Following his official retirement, Mr. Johnson continued significant participation in civic and educational affairs which included The Distinguished Board of Visitors at Claflin University.

Not only a loving husband, father, and grandfather, Mr. Johnson staunchly believed that "in order to be really thankful for what you have, you have to be willing to give back-make someone else's life better."

Mr. Johnson was predeceased by his parents, a brother, John, and a grandson, Charles H. Johnson, III. He leaves to cherish fond memories, his wife, Dr. Vermelle Jamison Johnson, PhD; a daughter, Dr. Temple O. Johnson, MD (Duane) Robinson; a son, Charles H. (LaToya) Johnson, Jr.; Two grandsons, Parker D. Robinson, and Chase Harry Johnson; a sister DeLarus (Modie) Risher, SC; two brothers, LTC (Ret) Wayman (Rosa) Johnson, and Attorney William H. (Annette) Johnson; nieces, nephews cousins, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to McKiever Funeral Home, the ancestral family - owned business, Conway, SC and Bythewood Funeral Home, Orangeburg, SC. Interment was at Belleville Memorial Gardens in Orangeburg.

In honor of his mother, the family invites memorial contributions to be made to Clafin University, the Lila Odessa McKiever Johnson Scholarship Fund, Office of Institutional Advancement, 400 Magnolia Street, Orangeburg, SC 29115
