Mr. Carl Edward Royster, of Newark, New Jersey formerly from Skipwith, Virginia entered eternal rest Saturday, November 18, 2023 at Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, NJ at the amazing age of eighty-two.
Carl was born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia on October 15, 1941. He was the first of eleven children born to the late John Henry and Lucille Royster. Three siblings preceded him in death, his sister, Martha R. Atkins; and two brothers, Leroy and James Anthony Royster.
Carl was educated in the public schools of Mecklenburg County and graduated from West End High school in 1958 at the age of sixteen. He received an Associate Degree from Virginia State College in electronics and later moved to Atlantic City, New Jersey. Carl never fully used his degree. He became captivated with cutting hair after watching Mr. Leonard Carter and his sons work magic at Carter’s Barber Shop. He taught himself to cut hair and in 1966 he opened his own shop. He soon outgrew the space and opened Carl’s Unisex World where he remained until he retired thirty-five years later.
Carl married the love of his life, Helen Davis, on November 18, 1962 and to this union three sons were born: Dion and Derek, and Kelvin Daniel who preceded him in death.
Cherishing his memories are his devoted wife of 61 years, Helen D. Royster; two sons: Carl Dion Royster (Rosemary) and Derek Jeffery Royster (Jacqueline); four grandchildren: Dominique Roach, Daquawn, (Andrea), Tamira, and Destyni Royster; four great grandchildren: Mekhi, Maddox and Marcellus Royster, Taryn Williams; one brother, John C. Royster (Wanda) of Chase City, VA; six sisters: Dr. Laura Royster of Detroit, MI, Hazel R. Robertson of Skipwith, VA, Cecelia R. Irby and Joann Royster (Linwood) of Chase City, VA, Deborah Howard (Marcus) of Williamsburg,VA and Theresa R. Stephens of Minerals, VA; two sisters-in-law: Mary Pittman and Carolyn Graham of Kinston, NC; three brothers-in-law: Roger Fisher, Donald Fisher (Betty) of Kinston, NC and Elvis Ray Fisher of Norristown, PA; a vast number nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and caring friends.
Funeral Services for Mr. Carl Edward Royster was held on Saturday, November 25, 2023 at 12Noon at the St.Luke Baptist Church, with the Elder Charles D. Allen eulogist.
