On January 13, 2023, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, Pastor and friend was called from labor to rest. Pastor Chester Wilmouth Terry, Sr. was born in Mecklenburg County on August 1, 1956 to the late John C. and Shelby Jean Smith Terry. He graduated from Bluestone Senior High School in 1975. Pastor Terry received his early Christian training from St. Luke Baptist Church under the direction of the late Pastor H. F. Peace. He served as Superintendent of Sunday School and as a Deacon. After accepting his call to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Pastor Terry was licensed by the St. Luke Baptist Church in June 1990 and ordained in September, 1990. He earned a B.A. in Christian Education from the M.C. Allen School of Religion from Lynchburg Seminary and College. Pastor Terry was immediately recruited to pastor at the New St. Douglas Baptist Church in Boydton, VA and served for thirty-two years until his death. He also was the esteemed pastor of the Whittle Grove Baptist Church in South Hill, VA for twenty-seven years. Pastor Terry served as the Vice-Moderator and was the current Moderator of The Riverside Association. He was a spirit-filled, born again Christian who felt so honored that God had called him to preach. He delighted in preparing the appropriate sermon for the occasion and could come up with some interesting titles, such as “Don’t Lose Your Head on Your Birthday”, “The Feet of a Pastor” and “Making it on Broken Pieces”. Pastor Terry’s favorite song was “I Have Decided to Follow Jesus” and his favorite scripture was 1 Corinthians 2:9. Aside from preaching, Pastor Terry had a passion for spending time with his family and the church family. He loved country music, oldies and goodies, Gun Smoke, making sweet potato pies, playing horse shoes, gardening, cutting and splitting wood, warming by a hot wood heater and anything he could find to do outside. Pastor Terry, our friend will be truly missed. Pastor Terry leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Helen; son, Chester Jr.; two daughters, Kimberly Harris (Dwayne) and Kristian Johnson; two stepsons, Lincoln and Brian Winn; three grandsons, Dwayne Harris, Jr., and Nelson and Jeremiah Johnson; three step grandchildren, Brandyn Winn, Damon Smith and Rylie Turner; his godson, Vincent Goode; two sisters, Brenda Terry and Linda Taylor (Anthony); one brother, Calvin Terry; cousins raised as brothers and sisters, Avon Overby, Arlean Knight, Lacinda Saunders, Abner Overby (Frances), Ruth Saunders, Marilyn Boyd, Lorene Bragg, and Joyce Palmer (Clyde); one uncle, Fitzgerald L. Terry (Sara); and a host of loving nieces, other relatives and friends including a father figure, Deacon Curtis Bouldin.
