HILDA LAMPKINS

Hilda Lampkins, born August 16, 1938, in Buffalo Junction, Virginia, to the late Charlie and Lorena Boxley, was the fourth of six children. Raised in the church, she was baptized at age 10 at Wharton Memorial Baptist Church in Averett, Virginia. She graduated from West End High School at 17 and later moved to Washington, D.C., where she began a career in nursing.

After working briefly as a day worker, Hilda was encouraged by Ms. Finn, a registered nurse, to pursue nursing. She graduated from Georgetown University Hospital School of Practical Nursing in 1961 and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. In 1978, while raising her family, she earned an Associate’s Degree and became a Registered Nurse. She served at Washington Hospital Center for 35 years before retiring.

Hilda married George Byrd Lampkins in 1968, and together they raised four children. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Byrd Lampkins; children Willie Royster and Andri White; and siblings William Speede and Charles Boxley.

Hilda leaves to cherish her memory her daughters, Ruth Hackney and Aretha Lynn Miller; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; siblings Queen Roberts, Anna Wray Wilkerson, and James Boxley; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A devoted member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church since 1982, Hilda served in the Nurses’ Ministry, Sunday School, and Senior Citizens’ Ministry. Her life reflected love, faith, perseverance, and service. She has faithfully finished her course and kept the faith.

A funeral service was held on Friday, September 11, 2026 at the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Washington, DC and then a graveside service was held on Monday, September 14, 2026 at the Wharton Memorial Baptist Church Memorial Garden, Clarksville, VA.
