Cecil passed away June 5, 2024, at home with his loving wife by his side. He was born October 19, 1932 in Huntington, West Virginia to Rosa Redd and Cecil Diggs, Sr. He graduated from Douglas High, Huntington, West Virginia.
He was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher.
Cecil later attended Howard University in Washington, D.C. He also attended the University of District of Columbia, Washington, DC, where he received a master of Business Administration. Cecil worked 36 years for the United States Postal Service. He started as a mail carrier and retired as a Human Resource Officer.
Cecil later graduated from the University of Bridgeport Connecticut, where he earned a Master’s degree in Education. He taught Business at Manchester High School and later at Woodbridge High in Woodbridge, Virginia.
He was also instrumental in starting a Prison Ministry in Prince William County, as well as one in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.
In 1985, he did a study tour in East Africa.
While in Washington D.C. Cecil met and later married Mable Smith, to whom he remained married for thirty years, until death.
Cecil was a lifetime member of the NAACP, after moving to Clarksville.
He enrolled at the Evan Smith School of Divinity, Virginia Union University, Richmond, Virginia. He remained a student there for three years, until his health declined.
Prior to moving to Clarksville, he was an active member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. There, he was very active in the Prison Ministry.
Cecil was also an ordained minister and member of the Mt. Ararat Baptist church where he remained until death. He worked in several capacities. His passion was Sunday School.
He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mable Smith Diggs, three children from a previous marriage: son Cecil Diggs, III, Charleston, SC, two daughters: Darlene Diggs, Charleston, SC, and Karen Hargrove Diggs, Yorktown, VA. He also leaves five grandchildren, five great grandchildren, loving nieces and nephews, a special niece, Precious Williams Fuller, special friends, Hilliard and Maxine Bane, Herbert Coleman, and a loving church family.
Visitation for Reverend Cecil Diggs, Jr. will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2024 from 4pm – 6pm. Visitation will be held at Carter’s Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, June 9, 2024 at 3:00PM at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church with the Reverend Raymond Roberts, Pastor, eulogist.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that you make a contribution to the Mt. Ararat Baptist Church Sunday School. This was one department that dear to Reverend Diggs’s heart.
