Doris Gwendolyn Holt, beloved mother, grandmother (known affectionately as Nana), great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2025, in Meridian, Mississippi, at the age of 104. Born on August 30, 1920, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Doris lived a life full of love, hard work, and unwavering devotion to her family.
Doris was a proud graduate of Philadelphia High School for Girls, a school that she cherished throughout her life. She continued her education at Temple University School of Pharmacy, where she set the foundation for a successful career. Doris was married to Carter Norwood, Sr. and later to Edward Holt.
She had a dedicated career, including her time at the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority, where she contributed to the growth and improvement of the city. In addition to her professional work, Doris found joy in being a business owner, running a daycare that touched the lives of many families.
Doris’ impact extended beyond her family, nurturing friendships and being a pillar in her community. Doris was also a long-time member of St. Paul’s Baptist Church in Philadelphia, PA.
Doris loved the simple pleasures of life, particularly tending to her garden, where she found peace and fulfillment. She was also an avid enthusiast of consignment shopping, always on the hunt for hidden treasures. Doris had a special affection for Miniature Schnauzers, and her love for dogs was evident in the way she doted on her furry companions throughout her life. They brought her joy, comfort, and a constant sense of companionship.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mamie Smith (Shaw); two siblings; and a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins, all of whom she deeply loved and remembered fondly.
As Nana, Doris leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and resilience. She is survived by her sons, Dr. Eric E. Holt, wife (Tynisha), and Carter Norwood, Jr.; her grandchildren, Dr. Cherie Murray, Jaimie Boyd (Holt); Carter Norwood III, and Carla Norwood; as well as a host of great-grandchildren, and a large extended family of cousins, all of whom she held dear.
Her presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her legacy will live on through her family and the countless lives she touched. Doris’ remarkable life was a testament to the power of family, faith, and perseverance. May she rest in peace.
