Obituary For Mattie Bea Massey-Johnson

Mrs. Mattie Bea Massey Jackson was born in York County, SC on November 17, 1939, the daughter of the late Robert Massey, Sr. and Maggie Robinson Massey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings – Sammie Massey, Frances Massey McCoy, Ernest Massey, William Dub Massey and Willie Lee Massey. Mrs. Jackson joined the Mount Hebron Baptist Church at an early age where she served faithfully until she relocated to Hempstead, New York.

Mrs. Jackson was a graduate of Emmett Scott High School and Friendship Junior College in Rock Hill. After relocating to New York, she joined the Union Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Clinton C. Boone where she served faithfully in the church that she loved so dearly for over 55 years. She was an Usher, Vice President of the Missionary Society, and President of the Pastor’s Aide for over 15 years, a member of the Culinary Ministry and Sunday School Class #2. Mattie was honored for her 50 Year at Eastern Baptist Association Usher’s Ministry. Mattie served the church in any capacity and was well loved by everyone.

Mattie loved cooking big meals for her family in the south when she visited. She cooked enough for a week. She had a pleasant disposition and she never met a stranger. Mattie married John Archie Jackson and remained married until his death after 40 years. Left to cherish her loving memories, her brothers – Robert Massey, Jr., and Theodore Massey of Rock Hill, SC; her Golden Girl Sisters – Gladys Crider, Linda Starks, Pat Roberts and Marian Williams, all of New York; her God-children Rev. Aaron George McCoy and Ashley McCoy, both of Charlotte, NC; devoted and loving nieces Betty (Ronnie) Gartrell, Ladara (John) McCain, Charlotte (Joe) Featherstone, Beverly Mann, Donna Massey, Cassandra (Tyrone) Blagmon, Deborah (Laney) Crawford, Dorothy Williams and Rosa Backstrom. Devoted and loving nephews – Sam Lowery, Charlie (Ozatta) McCoy, Rev. George (Rose) McCoy, Terry (ReMattie) McCoy, Chris McCoy, Robert L. Massey, Fredrick Massey, Wilbur Massey, Darryl Massey, Avery Massey, Ben (Lisa) Massey, Derrick Massey, Terrence Massey, William Massey, John Massey, Terry (Frances) Hart, Milton Massey, James (Janice) Massey; Her sisters-in-law – Bernice F. Massey of Charlotte, NC and Lougenia Massey and Janie Ruth Massey of Rock Hill, SC. She is also survived by a loving and longtime friend – Patricia Isom Jones of Rock Hill, SC; three special cousins – Rev. John E. Robinson, Mattie McKinney Miller both of Charlotte, NC; Mary Lee Robinson Moore of Baltimore, MD and other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mattie will be missed by all her loved ones
