Obituary For Andrew Lyon Gilbert

Andrew L. Gilbert Sr., 88, of Palm Coast, FL, passed away with his loving wife by his side on Friday, August 7, 2026.

Andrew was born on October 25th, 1937 in Melbourne, Florida, to Robert Levi and

Georgia Anna (Thompson) Gilbert. He was raised in Melbourne and graduated from Melbourne High School. After graduating, Andrew began his career in the culinary field, working at Patrick Air Force Base in Brevard County.

It was during this time, while living in a rooming house, that Andrew met his neighbor, Hattie Louise. Their friendship blossomed into a courtship, and in 1967, the two were united in marriage at St. James Baptist Church in Bunnell, Florida. This was the beginning of a beautiful partnership that would last 59 years.

Shortly after their wedding, Andrew and Hattie moved to Buffalo, New York, in search of better job opportunities. There, Andrew began a career at Bethlehem Steel in Lackawanna, NY, where he worked as a steel-worker for 40 years before retiring.

He always took great pride in the work of his hands. Outside of work, Andrew was a man of simple pleasures and steady passions. He enjoyed trying his luck with scratch-off tickets. He loved to tinker with almost anything and fix things up around the house, while ceaselessly engaging in handiwork and projects involving his cars. As a devoted Buffalo Bills fan, he could often be found cheering on his favorite team, and he was rarely seen without one of his iconic "I Love Jesus" hats, an expression of the faith that guided his life. His evenings were often spent watching Westerns, a consistent pastime that brought him so much joy.

Andrew leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 59 years, Hattie L. Gilbert;his daughters, Jacqueline D. (the late Kevin) Williams and Rhonda R. Gilbert; his sons, Maurice L. Gilbert and Darryl D. Gilbert; his grandsons, Andre M. (Ruthie)Lloyd Sr., Cameron A. Williams, Seth E. Gilbert, Gabriel V. Gilbert, and DavionGilbert; his granddaughter, Sylvia N. (Mario) Lane; and his great-grandchildren,Andre M. Lloyd Jr., Madison M. Lloyd, and Nizya A. Lloyd.

He was preceded in death by his son, Andrew L. Gilbert Jr., and his siblings, Doris Anna Gilbert Knight, Fannie Jean Thompson, Robert Gilbert Jr., and Luria Gilbert.

The Gilbert Family will receive extended family and friends on Friday, August 21, 2026 from 10:00a.m. - 11:00a.m. At Tabernacle of Deliverance in Bunnell, FL. The Homegoing Celebration will commence at 11:00a.m. Friday, August 21, 2026 at Tabernacle of Deliverance in Bunnell, FL. Mr. Gilbert final resting place will be in Craig - Palm Memorial Cemetery, Palm Coast, FL.
