Derek Leonard Gilliam was born on January 24, 1963, in St. Augustine, Florida, to Roosevelt Gilliam Sr. and Ella Mae Gilliam. He was employed at Florida State University, where he dedicated 15 years of service. Derek enjoyed fishing, cooking, and hunting.
In addition to his parents, Derek was preceded in eternal rest by his sisters, Beverly Jean Gilliam-Hankerson, Dorothy Ann Gilliam-Jordan, and Philoretta Denise Gilliam; and his brother, Roosevelt Gilliam Jr.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Teresa Gilliam; his daughters, Candace Gilliam, Dericka Gilliam, Breanna Gilliam, and Teaira (Targon) Ridley; his brothers, John (Sylvia) Gilliam, Rev. Charlie E. Gilliam, Michael (Lisa) Gilliam, Sr., Frederick Gilliam, and Vincent (Evelyn) Taylor; his uncle, Leroy (Barbara) Gilliam; three grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Visitation 5-6 p.m., Fri January 9, 2026, at Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church
Celebration of Life 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 10, 2026, at Tabernacle MB Church
Interment will be held in Evergreen Cemetery
