Obituary For Martha S. L. Williams

  • Martha Francis June Stewart was born on August 8, 1935, at Bellevue Hospital in New York, NY, the oldest child of the late William C. Stewart and Gladys A. (Majett) Stewart. Martha was predeceased by her baby sister Gladys (Nikki) Colon. Martha graduated from Morris High School in the Bronx, NY in 1953.
  • In March 1953, Martha gave birth to her first son William D. Stewart (Sonny) who preceded her in death. In 1955, she married Robert (Bobby) Lawson and in 1956; that marriage produced a son, Robert M. Lawson (Majie). Years after her divorce, she met and married Harold L. Williams, the love of her life in 1965. In 1966, from their marriage, daughter Lisa L. Williams was born.
  • In 1959 to 1961 Martha worked for the New York City Parks Department. In 1961 Martha joined the New York City Transit Authority as a token booth clerk and ascended to the title of supervisor as an assistant train dispatcher until her retirement in 1994. Her many assignments included the money train and the crew office.
  • In 1995 Martha joined the Rockaway Review, a senior citizen performing arts and dance troupe, due to her love of music and dancing. Among her other interests Martha was proud to be a member of, and an officer in the Transit Alumni Association of New York (TAANY), where she served as Financial Secretary, Treasurer, and Vice President. She was also a member of the New York City Transit Retirees of Florida, Chapter No. 2 of Palm Coast, as well as a member of the Subway Surface Supervisors Association.
  • Our mom was affectionately known as Mommy, Mommy Martha, The Creeper, Auntie, Boffa, and General McMartha.
  • Along with her love of dancing and music, Martha loved to watch movies and TV and enjoyed traveling.
  • Martha leaves to celebrate her memory: Her son Robert (Lisa), daughter Lisa (Carl), stepchildren: Harold Jr., Paula, Karen, and Tony, grandsons: Anthony (Ebby), Robert Jr., granddaughter Lanae, nephew Derron (Dino), great grandchildren, great nieces and great nephews, cousins, family and along with a host of friends.

Friday, September 18, 2026, 11:00 a.m., New Shiloh Baptist Church, 217 Merritt Ave, Wyandanch, NY

Interment will be held in Pinelawn National Cemetery in Farmingdale, NY
