Maurice Devon Spell was born on January 16, 1983,
in Gainesville, Florida, to Michelle Annette Winn (Spencer) and John Spell, Jr. He was nurtured throughout his life by a strong and loving family and, during his later years, was lovingly guided and supported by his grandmother, Doris “Dot,” and his aunt, Patricia “Pat” Spell, whose care and presence helped shape the man he became. On February 1, 2026, Maurice transitioned from this life in Gainesville, Florida, leaving behind a legacy of love, loyalty, and quiet strength. Maurice was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, John Spell, Sr.;
maternal grandparents, Cora Lee Winn and Hosea Winfield Winn, Jr.; aunts Linda Smart and Lydia Gillins; uncle Lee Smart; cousin Gerene Poole; and his beloved daughter, Princess Spell.
He leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Michelle Winn Spencer; his father, John Spell; his sisters, Karissma Spencer and Kierra Kaymore; his
brother, James Spencer (Victoria Spencer); his children, Lyrica, Korri, and Maurice Spell, Jr.; and his fiancée, Erika Chisholm. He is also lovingly
remembered by his grandmother, Doris “Dot”; his aunts Patricia “Pat” Spell, Kimberly Winn Parks, Gincy Huff, and Penny Harris; uncles Hosea Winn III,
Mike Winn; his very special cousin, Eric Spell, whom he loved as a brother; his cherished nieces and nephews, Mekhi Spencer, Kaveli Jones, Adonace
Isaac, Nyla Capps, and Viana Spencer; along with a host of cousins, his bonus children, loved ones, and sorrowing friends.
By trade, Maurice was an electrician, but in truth, he was a jack of all trades— skilled with his hands, resourceful, and always willing to help. He was known
as a true pit master, taking pride in his barbecuing and bringing people together through food and fellowship. Fishing was another passion, offering
him peace and reflection. Maurice was loyal, protective, funny, dependable, attentive, and deeply family-oriented. If you were his, you knew it—and you felt it.
Above all, Maurice was a man of God. His life was grounded in faith, and his favorite gospel song, “I Won’t Complain,” reflected the quiet strength and
gratitude he carried, even through life’s challenges. He lived with intention, loved with sincerity, and showed up for those he cared about without
hesitation. Maurice Devon Spell will be remembered not only for what he did, but for how he made people feel—seen, protected, loved, and supported. His legacy lives on through his children, his family, and every life he touched.
