Rosa Lee Brooks, affectionately known as “Honey,” was born in Boston, Massachusetts on April 21, 1948, to Albert and Mary Corbitt Brooks. As the firstborn, she carried a natural sense of responsibility and warmth that would define her life. Her family later settled in Green Cove Springs, where she graduated from Dunbar High School in Clay County.
Rosa gave her life to Christ at an early age and attended First African Missionary Baptist Church. She later met and married Thaddeus Young, and from their union came two children, Phil and Melissa Young.
A dedicated Certified Nursing Assistant, Rosa spent many years caring for others at Orange Park Medical Center and several nursing facilities. She was preceded in death by her father, Albert Brooks; her mother, Mary Brooks; and her brother, Gary Brooks.
Rosa was a woman full of laughter, joy, and a heart bigger than life. She loved her family deeply and brought fun to every gathering. She was always ready for a competitive game of spades — and if you weren’t her partner, watch out, because she was determined to clear the table with her spirited trash talk.
She gave unconditional love to her children and grandchildren, often playing with them as she “gobbled them up” in heart‑filled affection. Every birthday was a seafood celebration at her favorite spot, Red Lobster, surrounded by family and friends. Rosa supported her sisters without hesitation and cherished every moment spent with them.
When she wasn’t with family, Rosa enjoyed peaceful days with her cane pole and shrimp net, fishing, or relaxing with a good movie or western series. Her love of life, her bold honesty, and her unwavering devotion to those she loved made her an extraordinary mother, sister, grandmother, and friend.
She leaves to cherish her memories; children: Phil Young (Dana), Melissa Filson (David); grandchildren: Alishea Martin (Kenny), Tasheena Young, Danyell Young, Sherrod Jackson, Phil Young, Jr, Terance Austin, Alexia Young, Patrick Young, Jaresia Dinkins, Andre Filson, Darian Cushion, Adrian Filson; brother: Samuel Brooks, sisters: Dorothy Brooks, Dannette Brooks, Darlene Williams, Denise Bennet; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, her beloved niece Shantrelle Bennett, a host of nieces, nephews, friends and a special friend for over 20 years, Larry Tobler.
Rosa’s legacy lives on in the joy she shared, the love she gave, and the countless memories she created with those blessed to know her. She will truly be missed.
