Sarah James, 96, of St. Augustine, who peacefully entered eternal rest on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at 8:00 p.m. Sarah was born on Monday, August 5, 1929, in Stiffnugget to Coleman Griffin and Flossy Yousey. From humble beginnings, she developed the strength, determination, and unwavering faith that would guide her throughout her life and become a blessing to all who knew her. Mother Sarah James was a woman whose presence could light up any room. She possessed a joyful spirit and a genuine love for life that was evident in everything she did. Whether she was surrounded by family, sharing stories with friends, or offering wisdom to younger generations, Sarah believed that life was meant to be lived fully and with purpose. Nothing brought her greater happiness than spending quality time with her beloved family. Her home was a place of warmth, laughter, fellowship, and unconditional love. A devoted woman of faith, Sarah was a faithful member of Greater St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church, where she served diligently for many years. Her steadfast commitment to God, her church, and her community led her to become the Church Mother. In this role, she nurtured, encouraged, and prayed for countless individuals. Her life was a testimony of faith, humility, service, and devotion. She loved the Lord wholeheartedly and was never ashamed to share her faith or encourage others to trust in God's promises.

Sarah enjoyed many hobbies that reflected her vibrant personality and appreciation for life. She found peace and relaxation while fishing, often enjoying the quiet beauty of nature. Her gardening skills transformed ordinary spaces into flourishing displays of beauty and color. She believed in maintaining her health and enjoyed exercising, demonstrating that age was never a barrier to living actively and purposefully. Sarah was also an exceptional cook whose meals brought family and friends together around the table. Her recipes, seasoned with love and tradition, will remain treasured memories for generations to come. She was privileged to see five generations of her legacy, a testament to the love, guidance, and foundation she established throughout her life. Known for her honesty and strong convictions, Sarah never hesitated to voice her opinion. She stood firmly for what she believed was right and was respected as a true activist and advocate within her community. Her courage, wisdom, and determination inspired many. She taught others the importance of standing up for justice, speaking truth, and making a positive difference in the lives of those around them. For ninety-six years, Mother Sarah James exemplified grace, strength, faithfulness, and love. She leaves behind a legacy that cannot be measured merely by years but by the countless lives she touched through her kindness, wisdom, compassion, and unwavering faith. Her influence will continue to be felt through the family she cherished, the church she faithfully served, and the community she helped shape.

On Thursday evening, June 11, 2026, Heaven welcomed a faithful servant home. As she transitioned from labor to reward, we can imagine the Savior looking upon her and saying, "Well done, thy good and faithful servant." Her earthly journey has ended, but her legacy of faith, love, service, and perseverance will live on forever in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.

In addition to her parents, Sarah was preceded in eternal rest by her son, Robert Williams; siblings, Coleman Griffin, Marion Allen, Theodore Griffin, Annie Mae Borders, Daniel Griffin, Frank Griffin, and Mercedes Butler.

She leaves to cherish her many memories: her children, Delores (Horace) White Verdell, Melvin Sanders, Ann Davis, Florine James, Major (Karen) James Jr., Deborah James, Katherine (Cecil) King, Omiter James, Doretha (John) Griffin, Santa Anderson (Calvin) Brown, and Cecelia Anderson (Frank) Bush; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great - great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family and friends.

The Family will receive extended family and friends from 5:00p.m.-6:00p.m. Friday, June 19, 2026, at Greater St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church (69 Washington St. St. Augustine, FL 32084). The Homegoing Celebration for The Late Mother Sarah James will be 11:00a.m. Saturday, June 20, 2026, at New St. James Missionary Baptist Church (135 North Rodriquez St. St. Augustine, FL 32084). Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
