Fredrick “Fray” Charles Hardin transitioned into eternal peace in the arms of our Lord and Savior on Sunday, September 20, 2020 at the age of 60.
Fray was born on June 5th, 1960 in Gastonia, NC, son of Marie Hardin Kendricks and the late Billie Charles Hoke. Fray was educated in the Gaston County public school system. He graduated from Ashbrook High School in 1978 and went on to attend Gaston College for law enforcement training. He enjoyed playing tennis throughout high school, and he continued to play through much of his young adult years. Fray had an infectious smile, and his pleasant, outgoing demeanor made him hard to forget. Fray accepted the Lord and Savior into his life at a young age as a member of Friendship Baptist (now Friendship Christian) Church, where he was a member all his life. Fray served as a trustee and on the usher board and hymn choir before falling ill.
In 1980, Fray began his work in law enforcement as a dispatcher for the Gaston County rural police department. In 1981, his journey as a police officer began with the Bessemer City Police Department, spending fourteen years there and ultimately serving as Interim Chief of Police. From there he spent six years with the Dallas Police Department and two years with the Shelby Police Department before his retirement. Known as “Freddie” by most in law enforcement, all who worked with him saw him as a great officer with a humble spirit and a good heart. Fray took his duty to protect and serve serious, and the citizens of Gaston County were truly blessed during his tenure as an officer.
In addition to his father, Billy Charles Hoke, Fray was preceded in death by his brother, Billy Eugene Hoke, and sister, Tracy Hoke.
Left to cherish his loving memories is his wife of 42 years whom he adored, Margie “Neesie” Hardin of Gastonia, NC. To that union leaves two daughters, Kimberly Garvin and Tyronda Hardin of Gastonia, NC; seven grandchildren, Kelis, Layla, Kartier, Keyonteze, John, Joslen, Joh’Neesia and Jayden; three great-grandchildren, Danielle, John and Melodee; his mother, Marie Hardin Kendricks of Gastonia, NC; one brother, Darryl Hardin of Gastonia, NC; seven sisters, Henrietta “Dee” Allison and Asinda Brandon of Bessemer City, NC, Aminda Hardin of Gastonia, NC, Harriet Forney (Eric) of Rocky Point, NC, Deborah Hoke and Michelle Hoke of Hickory, NC and Beverly Loritts (Robert) of Conover, NC; 2 sister-in laws, Linda Hill (Alfred) and Brenda Jefferies (Joel) of Gastonia, NC; one brother-in-law, Thomas Burris of Gaffney, SC; a host of nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
