A'Dontis Jarriel Flournoy, lovingly known as AJ, was born to the parentage of Karen Williams Flournoy and Gregory K. Flournoy on March 28, 1989. He peacefully made his untimely transition from labor to reward on August 18, 2024.
As a child, AJ was very precocious, inquisitive, compassionate, and kind-hearted. He never met a stranger, always smiling, eagerly joining conversations, and sharing his viewpoint (wanted or unwanted) on every topic. He was a "military brat," spending the majority of his childhood in San Diego, California. Graduating from Scripps Ranch High School in 2007, he furthered his education at New Mexico State Junior College; Ohlone Junior College in Northern California, with an associate degree, and Metropolitan State University of Denver (Colorado), with a Bachelor of Arts in Behavioral Science. As basketball was an integral part of his life, he received a scholarship from all three higher learning institutions. After college, he had the opportunity to continue his career professionally overseas, but he chose to follow his heart: helping to raise his two sons.
After graduation, he moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico to be with his children; then relocated to Hollywood, Florida, for a better career opportunity, finally settling in Savannah, Georgia where he worked as a chemical operator and coached basketball. He was affiliated with several churches including Linda Vista Baptist and Horizon Christian Church in San Diego, Sagebrush in Albuquerque, St. Paul Baptist, and Pierce Grove Baptist in Louisville.
"AJ" was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents: Mary and William Middleton and Albert Williams; his paternal grandparents: Elizabeth and Willie L. Flournoy; his aunts and uncles: Emma L. Bridges, Betty Heggs, Minnie Cuyler, and William B. Freeman.
In addition to his parents, who were very proud of their amazing first-born, left to cherish his precious memories are his sons, Ashton and Arian Flournoy of Albuquerque; his sister Kimbreli Flournoy Perry and her husband Antonio; his brothers Ashton and Amiri Flournoy; his aunts and uncles, Jacqueline W. Sheely; Angela W. Terrell and her husband Donnell: Elaine, Carolyn, Ronnie, Johnnie, and Harvey Flournoy; Sharon F. Moore; Glenda Freeman; bonus brothers Tony Bennet, Michael Sheely, and Charles A. Moore; and a myriad of cousins, other relatives, and friends.
A celebration of life will be held at Pierce Grove Baptist Church, 3673 Bostic Mill Rd. on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at 11:00 A.M., with burial in the church cemetery: Pastor Christopher Moore, eulogist.
Pallbearers: Michael Sheely, Johnnie T. Flournoy, Charles A. Moore, and Wilbert Williams
Honorary Pallbearers: Officers of Pierce Grove Baptist Church
Flower bearers: First cousins

I looked up to AJ as a kid. He was a few years older than me, and I would often seen him at the gym on Saturdays at the Navy Base in San Diego. Deek, AJ, and myself was amongst some of the teens that would frequently play basketball with the adults. Very stiff competition. AJ would always put on a show no matter who was in the gym. He could score on all three levels with the tall athletic frame and it was always obvious how dedicated AJ was to his craft. One of the greatest high school athletes I ever had the pleasure of playing with or witnessing. He helped me set a standard for myself when it came to the kind of ball player I wanted to be. We shared great times together as kids. You will be missed AJ and my deepest condolences to the Flournoy Family. -Jwill (Justin Williams)
