Gussie Blades was born on January 5, 1932, in Wadley, Georgia, to the union of the late Albert Willie Fann and Chaney McBride Fann. She was the second child of eight brothers and sisters.
Wake service and viewing will be held Saturday, March 18, 2023 from 1:00 – 3:00 P.M.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, March 18, 2023 at 3:00 P.M. at James and Virginia Davis Memorial Chapel.
Gussie joined the church at an early age and became a member of Blount Chapel A.M.E. Church in Bartow, Georgia, in 1947. She served faithfully until graduation from Wadley High School in 1951.
Gussie moved to Florida immediately after high school seeking a better future, where she found her future husband. She brought him back home to get her parents' approval and blessings and married him in Louisville, Georgia.
In 1959, Gussie moved to New York City seeking better employment, where she briefly worked at Cascade Cleaners. While living in Brooklyn, she joined the Antioch Baptist Church and tried to be a Christian in every way she could. She spent a lot of time doing missionary work for the elderly.
Although her life was not always easy and had lots of ups and downs, Gussie persevered and eventually moved to Newark, New Jersey, where she spent the rest of her days trying to better her circumstances.
Gussie is survived by her beloved siblings: Adele Wellons, Sallie and Sidney Boston, Yoma Fann, Yvonne Smith, George Willie and Blanch Green Fann, and Chaney Fann. She will also be remembered by her numerous cherished nieces and nephews, as well as her two stepdaughters, Leona and Lenora, and her godson, Jesse Lee. Gussie will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Timothy(nephew), who provided her with monthly groceries, home attendant visits, and other necessities through her last days. Gary(nephew) who tirelessly drove her sisters back and forth to visit her in the rehabilitation center. Gussie loved the pecans that Blanch would send her every year. We are grateful for her home attendants, Sharron and Mercy who provided daily service for Gussie.
Lastly, the family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Yoma(brother), who stepped up and provided unwavering support during their time of need. He was an incredible source of strength and comfort, and they will always be grateful for his selflessness and kindness. Yoma went above and beyond to help them through this difficult time, and they will never forget his generosity and compassion.
The family deeply appreciates the love and kindness shown by all their relatives and friends during this difficult time.
