Four years of suffering and tarrying – a very long night – finally made a final, lingering shadow on Sunday, August 3, and then disappeared when the mortal body of Gwendolyn Denise Lewis “gave up the ghost” and transitioned as she put on the raiment of immortality. In life, Gwendolyn was loved dearly; and in death, she will be loved just the same. The family’s chain may be broken now, and things don’t seem the same, but as God calls us all one by one. And, therefore, the chain will link again.

Gwen took mortal flight in this world on November 22, 1962, being the eighth of nine children born to the parentage of the late Alvin Lewis and Cleo Hicks Lewis of Louisville.

While growing up on the home farm, Gwen’s parents instilled into her and all of their nine children the value and importance of a “good education” and post-secondary studies. Following her mother’s educational dreams of achieving a solid, educational background, Gwen graduated early from Louisville High School but was a part of the 1980 class and then matriculated and graduated from Paine College in Augusta, Georgia, 1983, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. After graduation, she immediately enrolled in Bowling Green State University, Ohio, but later earned an MBA from Atlanta University in 1987. She worked in corporate America for years at several businesses as a buyer/analysist to include United Defense, Westinghouse Savannah River Company and Thermo King Corporation. She was a Senior Director with Maleleuca, Inc. After years of working as a financial consultant, she decided that she would open her own tax professional services in 1992, L&A Taxes and Accounting, LLC. For over 30 years she prepared tax returns, provided financial consultation and conducted several tax classes that served a client base of over 300. One of her greatest aspirations was her desire to make people aware of their financial opportunities and help them “get ahead.” And thus, she received numerous awards and recognitions.

Early in life she joined the Mays Grove Baptist Church Family where she sang on the choir and later served as Financial Secretary before resigning that office in June 2025. She was also a member of The Metro Mass Choir.

Gwen was a loving sister to her siblings, a great “big” sister to “Ollie Ree,” a loyal cousin and a very compassionate friend; however, her greatest accolade was being a fiercely protective mother and a doting grandmother. When she stepped from Time to the never-ending realm of Eternity, she joined loved ones already gone before her, to include her parents: Alvin and Cleo Lewis, Sr.; four siblings: Joseph Lewis of Macon, Roosevelt Lewis and Jeffery Anfield of Waynesboro, and Leon Lewis of Louisville; and a sister-in-law, Gloria Jean Kelley-Lewis of Waynesboro, among several other aunts, cousins, uncles, grandparents, and loved ones.

Death claims the body, but God claims the soul. It is left to the living to embrace the legacy of the dead. Cherishing her memory of servitude is a daughter, Jessica Lewis, Louisville; three sons: Mario Hughes, Atlanta; Matthew Lewis (Georgia State University); and Devin Ruff, Louisville; two grandchildren: Jade Hughes of Atlanta and Desmond Williams of Louisville; four brothers: Rev. Alvin Lewis, Jr. (Lynda); Obediah Lewis, Waynesboro; and Arthur (Ann) Lewis and Dr. Michael L. Lewis, Louisville; three sisters: Ollie Marie Gamble, Mocksville, NC; Sharon Buckson, Hephzibah; and Lisa (Richard) Anfield Stone, Waynesboro; four step-brothers: Rev. Tracy (Jackie) and Telly Brown, Louisville; Kevin (Sandra) and Jefferey Brown, Augusta; two sisters-in-law: Lasana Anfield, Waynesboro; and Hattie Lewis, Macon; three uncles: Rufus Lewis, Augusta; Rev. Henry (Christine) Lewis, Louisville; and Rev. Honora (Essie) Lewis, Wrens; three aunts: Josephine Lewis, Keysville; Majorie Green, Detroit, Michigan; and Ella Lewis, Columbus, OH; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, tax clients, friends and associates.

Public viewing will be held Friday, August 8, 2025 from 3:00 - 6:00 P.M. at Davis Funeral Home, 725 Beech Street, Louisville, GA.

Celebration of Life Saturday, August 9, 2025 at 2:00 P.M. at the Stone Springfield A.M.E. Church, 7476 Highway 296, Stapleton, GA.

Interment will be held in the Mays Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, 1310 Mays Grove Church Road, Wrens, GA.
