On the 2nd day of the week, Monday, May 28th in the year of our Lord 1928, a beautiful baby girl named Mary was born to Bose and Mattie Stone. By the providence of our Almighty God, Avera, GA was her chosen birthplace. As important as her education was to her, caregiver duties became her lot in her young life and as a result, her formal education ended very early in the Jefferson County School System. It was only through her love of learning that later through various lines of employment she received certification in several areas of food service. Through the workings of the Holy Spirit and her desire to “always be ready to give an answer to every man a reason of the hope that was in her”, her literary abilities were honed. Given the opportunity to venture outside of her birthplace, Mary moved to New York City and made her new home with her maternal aunt, Beulah Jones. It was there she learned more about life, living and family. That awareness created a longing and an even greater appreciation for her family in Georgia. Shortly thereafter, she returned to her Jefferson County, GA roots and was introduced by Willie Albert Farmer to Tom Wesley Farmer, Jr. who later became her husband on October 12, 1952. From that union, two daughters were born; Barbara F. Thomas and Ellen (Roy) Brown. That union lasted until the demise of Tom, Jr. on October 6, 2014. Unafraid of work and determined to help secure a lifestyle she felt befitting her children, Mrs. Mary secured employment in the Jefferson County School System Food and Nutrition Services while simultaneously holding a custodial position with the U.S. Federal Government at Fort Gordon, GA. As the years progressed, it became better suited for her family for her to work full-time solely with the Jefferson County School System. When her retirement came in 1990-91, she was quickly asked to assist at the Wrens Christian Daycare in food service part-time. That temporary position, starting in 1999, lasted for nearly fifteen years. Upon the close of the daycare, its’ mission to have parents “Give your children to Jesus through Us” became Mrs. Farmer’s personal mission as she sought to assist working, single mothers become gainfully employed by opening the doors to her personal home and alleviating concerns with daycare issues. In her early years, under the tutelage of her mother, ministers of the gospel, maternal uncles and other church leaders, Mary joined Stone Springfield A.M.E. Church in Stapleton, GA. Years later, seeking to enrich her Christian walk through prayer and diligent bible study, she was impressed to heed the clarion call to follow Jesus more closely, and in November 1975, was baptized into the Wrens Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Wrens, GA where she served faithfully as hospitality chairperson, head deaconess, daycare food and nutrition worker and a member of the custodial staff. She was found in church every Sabbath until her recent hospitalization and passing. On January 30th, that same Jesus who speaks to the winds and waves, spoke to the impending storm raging in the life of Mary Stone Farmer at Jefferson Hospital and said, “Peace be still.” With that command, Mary took her last breath, went quietly and peacefully to sleep and now waits for her resurrection and the soon return of Jesus, who is a promise keeper. (1Thessalonians 4:13-18) In her passing she leaves behind her two daughters, one son-in-law; a granddaughter, Embra S. (LaTorrance) Brinson and a great grandson, Chandler K. Alexander of Hephzibah, GA; one sister, Edna Roberson, Jersey City, New Jersey; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Farmer, Stapleton, GA; God children, Florrie B. Smith, Carolyn Pitts, Josephine Williams, Harriet Boyd-Page, Tim Smith, Joseph “Joe” & Pam Nelson, Pleaz Smith, Edoris Thomas and Charlotte Andrews; nieces raised as her own, Mary “Mildred” Kelley and Patricia Blake; loving niece and care-giver Ada L. Brown; two great nieces reared as her own, Ebony & Telonica Blake; God grandchildren, Herman Wright, Fernandias McCoy, Teris Lambert, Kanesha Roberts, Tangellia Cooper Moore, Heather Lane, Terashia Blake, Ciara Blake, Vashti Williams, Cassati Howard, Christ’yan Jones and Cannadi Howard. Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 3, 2023 at 1:00 P.M. at Stone Springfield A.M.E. Church, 7476 Highway 296 Stapleton, GA. Interment will be held in the church cemetery.
