Obituary For Walter Mitchell, Jr

Deacon Walter Mitchell, Jr. of Walden Street in Wadley, Georgia, was born on August 12, 1945, to the late Walter Mitchell, Sr. and Rose Lee Mitchell. On July 4, 2026, he peacefully departed this life at Pruitt Health of Old Capital, Louisville, Georgia. His life was a remarkable testament to faith, service, hard work, and unwavering devotion to his family, church, and community.

Celebration of Life Services will be held on Sunday, July 12, 2026, at 2:00 P.M. at Spears Grove Baptist Church, 4250 Coleman Chapel Road, Wadley, Georgia 30477. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Military Honors. Public Viewing will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2026, from 3:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. at Davis Funeral Home, 725 Beech Street, Louisville, Georgia.

Walter proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1969 to 1970 and was honorably discharged for his faithful military service. Following his service, he began a distinguished career as a Machine Operator with Thermo King Corp., where he dedicated 42 years before retiring. Gifted with exceptional mechanical ability, Walter could repair just about any automobile engine, and family and friends often relied on his knowledge and willingness to help.

A devoted member of Spears Grove Baptist Church for more than 60 years, Walter faithfully served the congregation in numerous capacities. He was ordained as a Deacon over 45 years ago and served diligently as the church Treasurer. His steadfast faith and commitment to God's work left a lasting impact on all who worshipped alongside him.

Walter was united in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Frances Worthen Mitchell, in 1967. Together they shared nearly 59 years of love, partnership, and cherished memories until his peaceful transition. He was also a proud and dedicated member of Snowden Lodge #216, where he recently received a Lifetime Membership Certificate on June 30, 2026, in recognition of his years of faithful service to the lodge.

Known for his warm spirit and wonderful sense of humor, Walter never met a stranger. He loved keeping others laughing with his jokes, enjoyed spending time fishing, and found great joy in cheering on his favorite sports teams, including the Atlanta Braves, Georgia Bulldogs, Atlanta Falcons, and Atlanta Hawks.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Mitchell, Sr. and Rose Lee Mitchell; his brother, John B. Mitchell; and his sisters, Earnestine Mitchell and Annie Mae Hunt.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories his devoted wife, Frances Worthen Mitchell of Louisville, Georgia; his daughter, Erica (Johnathan) Quarterman of Louisville, Georgia; several his sisters, Lizzie Mae Bostic of Ormond Beach, Florida, Mattie M. (John T.) Smith of Blythe, Georgia, and Ammie (Jessie) Alston of Statesboro, Georgia; several nieces and nephews that he loved but one, Pastor Shaun Latimore, Grovetown, GA, that he treated as his son; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law: Earnestine Mathews, Louisville, KY, Betty Percell, Bronx, NY, Rosena Worthens, Cleveland, OH, David Warthen, Augusta, GA, Johnathan Warthen, Spartanburg, SC; a host of loving relatives, church family, Masonic brothers, and many dear friends who will forever treasure his life, love, and legacy.
