Obituary For Horace Evan Johnson

Graveside services for Mr. Horace Evan Johnson, of Stone Mountain, will be held Friday, July 24, 2020, 11:00 AM in Resthaven Gardens of Memory, 2284 Candler Rd., Decatur. Rev. Mark Seals, Officiating. There will be no public viewing for Mr. Johnson.

Horace Evan Johnson was born on August 11, 1952 to the proud parents of Clara & James Johnson. Horace gave his life to Christ at an early age and was brought up in a Christian home. He never changed his church membership from the church he grew up in at Cosmopolitan AME Church located in the heart of Vince City, Atlanta GA. Horace was educated in the Atlanta Public School System and graduated from E.R. Carter Elementary and Booker T. Washington High School. Shortly after high school, Horace joined the US Army, in 1971, where he served for three years which included a tour of duty in Okinawa Japan and Viet Nam. Upon completion of his service to his country, in 1974, he received an honorable discharge. Horace always had an interest in education. He took enough courses to receive a degree over time after his military service. If he wanted to know more about a particular subject, he would take a class at Atlanta Metropolitan College. He was a life-long learner. He had great respect for education and those who pursued higher education. He had several jobs during his life however, most of his career was spent at Emory University Wesley Woods Facility where he served as a grounds keeper and maintenance staff worker. Following his employment at Emory he decided to change careers and pursued studies in carpentry and electrical courses at Atlanta Technical College. He received certifications in carpentry and electrical work. He also worked on various construction jobs throughout the city of Atlanta and surrounding areas in the state of Georgia. Horace is survived by his loving sister, Mrs. Portia Griffin (Bobby), his niece Mrs. Kimberly Hammonds (Kenneth), their children, Khoi & Keira Hammonds, his nephew Mr. Scott (Nebu) Griffin and a host of other nieces and nephews of his “Extended Griffin family “ who all lovingly referred to him as “Uncle Horace”. Horace is also survived by his cousins, Mrs. Jeanetta Glenn (Jimmie), James Henderson (Ann), of Montgomery, AL, Ms. Wanda Ann Dillard, Emily Jean Lewis & Mr. Edward Lewis ( Felicia) of Chattanooga, TN and Mr. David Henderson of Detroit, MI . Horace will truly be missed by his family, friends and associates. He was a very kind, thoughtful, generous, independent and private person. He was the kind of person that would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it and wouldn’t think about it twice. Recently he cut the grass of one of his neighbors’. At first she didn’t know who did it. One day she thought to ask him if he cut her grass while he was cutting his grass. He replied yes. She asked him how much she owed him, he replied “No Charge”. He told her he noticed she and her husband recently had a baby and he thought perhaps they had their hands full taking care of the new little one and he just wanted to help them out. These were the types of selfless acts of kindness that he would do for “No Charge”. Rest on my dear brother known as Uncle Horace, cousin and friend to others. You certainly deserve it. We loved you and will miss you but God Loved you Best!

Family and friends are asked to assemble at the cemetery at 10:45 AM. Donald Trimble Mortuary, Inc., 1876 Second Ave., Decatur, GA 30032. 404-371-0772.

Send flowers to the service of Horace Evan Johnson

1 Thessalonians 4: 13, 14

Moreover, brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant* about those who are sleeping in death,+ so that you may not sorrow as the rest do who have no hope.+ 14 For if we have faith that Jesus died and rose again,+ so too God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in death through Jesus.+

Our staff will continue to keep your family in our prayers. We thank you for allowing us to serve your family.
