Ruby Peoples, daughter of the late Robbie Lee Hankerson and Melinda Robinson Hankerson, was born January 26, 1950 in Barnwell County, South Carolina. A native of Williston, South Carolina, she graduated from Kelly Edwards High School, class of 1967 and Denmark Area Trade School where she studied tailoring.
Ruby was employed by the DeKalb County School Board for more than 20 years from which she retired in August 2016. She drove a School Bus and prepared meals in the lunch room. Ruby chose this working environment to ensure that she would be available for her children whether in school or out.
Ruby loved people, was a constant giver, and never met a stranger. She loved family and organized the Ashley-Hankerson family reunion for over 25 years, the most recent being July 2019. Ruby was a seamstress and for years made dresses for prom and weddings, including wedding gowns. She was an avid gardener and loved working in her yard. Her immaculate landscaping included plants that could not be found in local nurseries. She also had a green thumb when it came to house plants which flourished under her care. Ruby loved to cook and her homemade biscuits were second to none.
Ruby was predeceased by her parents, Robbie Lee and Melinda Hankerson and her brother Robert Hankerson. Ruby was called from this world to take her rest on October 30, 2020.
Her life will continue to be honored and celebrated by her husband, George Peoples, Sr.; sons: George Peoples, Jr (Holly), Enid OK; Kenneth Peoples (Trona), Jonesboro GA; Walter Peoples (Candice), Stone Mountain GA; daughter LaKesha Peoples Wheeler, Decatur GA; and a sister Joan C. Pryor (RC) Williston SC. Her legacy will continue through her grandchildren: Taylor, Deion, Morgan, Justin, Richard, Kevin, Josiah, Chase, Chloe’, and Camille. She also leaves close cousins: Anne Hicks Perry, Aiken SC; Min. Lenwood Sapp (Diane), St. Petersburg, FL; and Leila Williams (Arthur), Walterboro, SC; an aunt, a brother & sister-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

I am Blessed and Humbled to call Ruby a Sister-Friend for 34 years. I will always cherish the times we prayed, laughed and cried together. As I read Proverbs 31:10-31 I am reminded of Ruby and the Life she shared with so many. Ruby's hospitality and Godly Spirit will never be forgotten. To George and George Jr, Kenny, Walter and Keisha know that the God Ruby served in an unselfish manner will comfort you in the days to come and if we remain faithful we will be with her again. We as Children of God trust in the faithful scripture of 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18. A Peaceful Rest for a Beautiful Spirit!
Our staff will continue to keep your family in our prayers. We thank you for allowing us to serve your family.
