Obituary For Chloe Dockery

Mrs. Chloe Elizabeth Runderson Dockery of 1310 Dockery Drive, Shelby, North Carolina, slept peacefully away on Monday, February 22, 2021 at The Addison of Knightdale, Knightdale, North Carolina, as she left with an angel of God to live in her heavenly home. Mrs. Chloe Elizabeth Runderson Dockery, age 83, was the youngest daughter born to the late Mr. LeaDeal Runderson and the late Mrs. Irma Laurendine Runderson. She was born August 15, 1937 in Mobile, Alabama. Chloe was united in holy matrimony at her home church, Big Zion AME, to her husband of 58 years, her soulmate, Mr. Carl J. Dockery, Jr. and to this blessed union two children were born, Carl III and Rosanna. Chloe was a high achiever from the onset. Her innate intelligence, inquisitive mind, tenacious commitment to excel and natural leadership capabilities stood out early as she matriculated through the public schools of Mobile, Alabama, and graduated from Central High School, Class of 1957. She received her Bachelor of Science in Industrial Arts from Tuskegee Institute in 1961 and a Master of Education in School Counseling from the University of Cincinnati in 1969. Chlo, as she was affectionately called by most who knew her, was known for her love and her adoration of her family. She was a fierce friend whose gifts were endless – especially her ability to sew and decorate. She enjoyed entertaining and festive holiday “get togethers” when she would display her hospitality as well as her decorating and Creole culinary skills. She was committed to helping and serving people and made a career out of her gift for enriching young people through her service in the school systems in Mobile and Cleveland counties. Chlo’s early professional career started in the school system in Mobile, Alabama teaching home economics. She and her beloved Carl Jr. moved to the state of Washington where she had a brief break from teaching to begin expanding her family. Upon moving to Shelby, North Carolina where she and Carl Jr. settled to make their lives and raise their family, Chlo entered the Cleveland County school district working at Burns Senior High School as a teacher of home economics. Chlo was eventually promoted to a position at the Cleveland County Superintendent’s Office. She finished out her professional career at Burns Junior High/Middle School serving as a guidance counselor where she retired with 33 years of service. During her professional career, Chloe participated and served on several professional and community organizations with focus on mental health and counseling. Chlo was a true socialite who found service and social organizations very fulfilling. She was a charter member of the Piedmont Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, Gastonia, North Carolina where she served in various capacities including executive offices and chaired multiple program committees. She was a charter member of the Audacian Club, Shelby, North Carolina where she served as President and chaired and participated on various committees. Chlo was also a member of the Carrousels Incorporated, Charlotte, North Carolina. She had a passion for playing bridge and especially being partner with her late father-in-law, Carl Dockery, Sr. Chlo loved people and never met a stranger. She had a very inviting and warm personality. Truly to know her was to love her! Chloe has completed her course and made the earthly transition into her new heavenly home where she joins her parents, Lea Deal and Irma Runderson; her beloved son, Carl III; her sisters, Rosanna and Beverly; and her brothers, Lea Deal Jr. “Jack”, Marshall, Robert “Dooley”, Carl “Booba”, James “Diddy Boy” and George “Twitty Whitty” and her in-laws Carl Sr. and Alma Dockery. Those left to treasure her memory are her loving husband Carl James Dockery, Jr. of the home, daughter Mrs. Rosanna Dockery Thompson (Allen) of Raleigh, NC; three grandchildren, Ms. Takeeley Dockery Lawrence of Kings Mountain, NC, Carlie Morgan Thompson of Raleigh, NC, and Jasper Dockery Thompson of Raleigh, NC and two great-grandchildren, Jada Carlise Lawrence and Kyndall Alysia Lawrence of Kings Mountain, NC. Other survivors are brothers-in-law, Mr. William (Bill) Norsworthy of Shelby, NC, Mr. Charles D Dockery of Trois-Rivières, Canada and Mr. Paul E Dockery (Gilda) of Charlotte, NC, sister-in-law, Mrs. Sybil Runderson of Mobile, Al, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
