Obituary For Charlie Varner, Jr.
Charlie Varner, Jr., of Montgomery, AL, passed away on January 31, 2026. A funeral service is planned for Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Zion A.M.E. Zion Church, 455 W Fred D. Gray Avenue, with Pastor Dr. Claude A. Shuford officiating. Burial will follow at Eastwood Cemetery under the direction of E.G. Cummings Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation will be Monday, February 16, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. Omega Service will take place that evening from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Varner will lie in repose at the church one hour before the service.

Brother Varner was one of the Brothers who initiated me into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity the Beta Upsilon Chapter in 1959 on the campus of Alabama State University. Charlie was a stickler for details. He served ASU many with distinction in Alumni Affairs. Brother Varner was the personification of "Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love For All Mankind." Brother Charlie E. Hardy
