Dear friends and family of Melissa:
On behalf of Smith Center for Healing and the Arts, we want to express our deep sadness over hearing of Melissa's passing.
Melissa attended one of our residential retreats for people with cancer, in the summer of 2023. While we only spent a few days together, Melissa had a presence you cannot forget, and made a huge impression on all of us. Both the staff and participants were touched and inspired by her.
She possessed a magnetic energy: everyone was drawn to her optimism, wisdom and gracious smile. And a clarity of spirit that you rarely encounter.
A natural leader, she plunged into her cancer treatment without flinching. It seemed as though cancer had met its match in Melissa; despite facing so many obstacles; she was determined to find a way around or through whatever challenge she encountered. She was crystal clear that cancer would not dominate her life, and continued to make plans to travel, see friends and participate in athletic competitions. She was truly an inspiration to other survivors, and formed friendships with her co-retreatants.
It is truly heartbreaking that her life was taken so early, and the comments left by others give testimony to her unique and inspiring talents and the impact she had on those she knew.
Melissa carried herself with such grace, and certainly left the world a better place. and we are grateful to have crossed paths with her.
May her memory to all who knew her be a blessing.

My deepest Sympathy for your loss. Melissa was one of the consular, i adore during my stay at the Cancer treatment i attended. She will always asked or you ok, or can I help you. I took sick during that time. She would visit me, with that beautiful smile. Angels in heaven are rejoicing to meet such a beautiful blessed person.Sleep my friend, no more pain. Rest in peace until we meet again. God Bless
To the Holyfield family. Melissa was like a daughter to me. I will miss her dearly. I pray that God will strengthen your hearts today and the days to come. God bless you all.
Today, my heart is heavy as I say goodbye to a close friend—Melissa was a sister, a fellow warrior, and one of the purest souls I've ever known. From the day we met in college to the years we stood side by side in service, her strength, compassion, and unwavering loyalty left a mark on my life that can never be erased.
God has called one of His angels home. While the pain of her absence is incredibly tough, I find some peace in knowing that her journey on this earthly plane is complete, and she has returned to the place she truly came from—back to His arms, where there is no more suffering, only light.
Melissa lived with purpose, served with honor, and cherished those she kept close. She brought warmth and courage wherever she went, and those of us who were lucky enough to know her will carry her memory like a badge of honor.
Rest easy now, my friend. Your mission here is done, and you completed it with grace and valor. Until we meet again—thank you for your friendship and your service.
My deepest condolence to Melissa's family. Praying for you all! 🙏🏾
I was stationed with Melissa at FE Warren and Patrick AFBs, but I got to really know her at AFTAC. She was a joyful person with a big smile. My wife and I really enjoyed spending time with her and we are sad to see her leave this world so soon.
My condolences to Melissa's family and friends. God has gained a new Angel. Sending prayers up and out to the family. I can remember you calling and singing the last two dollars I'm not going lose. Always cheerful and brighten up everyone's day. You will be missed my sister.🙏🏾🩷🙏🏾🩷
MY SINCERE CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY. MAY SHE REST IN HEAVENLY PEACE! EDITH GINWRIGHT-WASHINGTON, MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA
Melissa, we have been trying to wrap our heads around that you are now with our Heavenly Father. You were a force to be reckoned with. You fight for the ones you love so fiercely, mentored those so passionately, and stood your ground in those and things you believed in. Your smile and glares (lol) may have dimmed a bit on Earth but the path that you have blazed and the love that you have given to us and our boys will forever shine bright here on Earth. We are so blessed to call you our sister and auntie. We are comforted to know that you are no longer suffering, and you can now rest your armor beautiful. To the Holyfield Family, we will continue to pray for comfort and love for you all. I know you are so proud of the woman, daughter, sister, soldier, and fighter that she was. We love you and we are always here for you.
Melissa was a great friend and will be missed. I can hear her laugh, and our prayer is that you will hear her laugh and smile in the days to come. May the Lord comfort you all.
Melissa, I'll always think fondly of the good ol early Lt days at Vandy hanging out with you and the crew. Great times! Bright, joyful and fun to be around. I'm glad we got to reconnect yrs later at the Pentagon and at Johnny's Chance of Command. You'll be missed.
