Retired Army Command Sgt. Maj., Simon Lee Jones Jr., age 79, passed away on June 12, 2021 in Duluth, GA. He was born on October 2, 1941, in Montgomery Alabama. He is preceded in death by parents Simon Lee Jones, Sr., Clara Mae Edwards, and his beloved daughter Octavia Jones. He leaves behind three loving and devoted children: Reverend Leander (Vanessa) Jones of Tuscaloosa, AL., Veronica (William) Thornton of Montgomery, AL., Reverend Orlando (Deborah) Jones Sr. of Duluth, GA., a beloved brother Willie (Theresa) Jones of Montgomery, Alabama; 19 grandchildren: Torrance (Cassie) Jones, Shayla Adams, Brittany Walker, Veronica (Todd) Dobbins, Jeannie Jones, Jeremy (Jasmyn) Jones, Leslie Jones, Marsalis (Ashley) Jones, Nicholas (Justice) Jones, Keyeion Thornton (preceded in death), D’Andria Thornton, Quindarius Thornton, William Thornton II, Dari Thornton, Zalkari Thornton, Kerry Bradford, Candace Bradford, Orlandria Jones, Tiffany Jones and Orlando Jones, Jr.; 15 great grandchildren: Torrance Jones Jr., Riley Jones, Elias Jones, Marquarious Adams, Antonio Brister Jr., Armani Brister, Todd Dobbins II, Jah’Tavia Jones, Jah’Ria Lockhart, Chynna Cook, Arthur Jones, Skylar Jones, Emmarie Jones, Hamilton Jones and Lincoln Jones. He also has seven cherished nieces, one nephew and a host of other relatives and friends. In celebration of his life a graveside service with military honors will be held Friday, June 18, 2021, at 12:30 p.m. at the Alabama National Cemetery located at 3133 Highway 119, Montevallo, AL. 35115. The body will lie in repose on Thursday, June 17, 2021, from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. and Friday, June 18, 2021, from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at Wills Funeral Service, 701 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Northport, AL. 35476 Services will be in compliance with guidelines recommended by the CDC and the state of Alabama. Everyone in attendance must wear a mask and adhere to social distancing guidelines.

I just learned of Mr. Simon's transition to glory. He was always there on Sunday when I taught children and we enjoyed our friendship. Enjoy your sweet memories, family, and do him proud. He loved you so much.
