Clarence “Butch” Sherman Withrow, 69, of Shelby, NC, was born on August 6, 1954 to the late Frances Mae Withrow in Cleveland County, NC. He departed this earthly life on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at Atrium Health Cleveland in Shelby, NC.
Butch attended Brooks Chapel United Methodist Church from an early age. He was educated in the Cleveland County Public School system (Shelby City Schools) graduating from Shelby High School in 1973. After graduation, Butch enlisted in the U.S Army and served for two (2) years. During this time, he earned the distinction of being a sharpshooter. After serving in the military, Butch worked at Cleveland Lumber Yard and several other places. He also worked alongside his Uncle Glenn at Glenn’s Tile Services for several years.
Butch was preceded in death by his loving mother, Frances Mae Withrow. His uncles: Henry (Rossie), Van (Henrietta), Zan (Emily), Clarence (Bettye), Carlee (Bernice), Glenn (Vernelle) and Joe (Mary) Hunt; aunts, Comilla (Jake) Sinkler, and Minnie (Rupert) Bell.
He is survived by his only son, Omar Antoine Porter of Shelby; his granddaughters, Keairah Dawkins of Fort Mill, SC; Omariyah Clardie of Shelby; and Winter Porter of Bush Kill, PA; his last living aunt, Helen Withrow Love. Those to whom he held a special bond, Rodney Porter, of Shelby; David and Darren Lee of Shelby, NC; and Jason Wilson of Boiling Springs; Butch is also survived by a host of loving cousins, friends, classmates and former co-workers.
Butch was known for his love of playing basketball in his beloved community of Robertsdale; his love of anything fitness related (he was extremely strong)!! He loved listening to classic R & B and in his later years just being around family. Butch will be greatly missed by those who loved and treasured him.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 24, 2024 at 2:00 PM at New Ellis Chapel Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 1:30 PM until 2:00 PM Friday and all other times at 518 April Drive, Shelby, NC.
