Mrs. Hazel Lee Sims Cherry, 80, of 305 Olsen Drive Shelby, NC passed away on Thursday, March 25, 2021 at Atrium Health-Cleveland. She was born on February 9, 1941 in Cleveland County, NC to the late Jack Sims and the late Effie Lou Barnett Sims.
Mrs. Cherry was employed with Wal-Mart for 16 years. She was a member of Hoppers Chapel Missionary Baptist Church and was a member of the Eastern Stars. She loved cooking and would open her home up to anyone who needed a meal. Her other pastimes which she loved were watching basketball and raising her grand and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Samuel George Cherry, Sr.; three sisters, Rosie Brooks, Christine Russell and Maggie Gullatte and four brothers, Matthew Sims, Shiloh Sims, Frank Sims and Willie B. Sims.
Left to cherish her precious memory, her daughter, Shelba Cherry (Edward); two sons, Samuel Cherry, Junior (Ashley) and Sherman Cherry all of Shelby, NC; three sisters, Pauline Wright, Betty Allison (Jimmy) both of Shelby and Mary Parks of Charlotte, NC; one sister-in-law, Della Degree (Freddie) and two brothers-in-law, Edward Lee Gullatte and Isaiah Russell. Mrs. Cherry has 17 grandchildren whom she help raise in her home at some time or another and she has 14 great-grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services for Mrs. Cherry will be private. The service will be livestreamed starting at 1:45 PM on Thursday, April 1, 2021. She may be viewed at S.T. Enloe Memorial Chapel from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 1, 2021. The family will be receiving friends from 1:30 PM until 2:00 PM at Hoppers Chapel Baptist Church. Burial will take place at Sunset Cemetery.
