When I was lost & headed for hell, the prison staff moved Henry (Hollywood) to the bunk beside mine. That night I was awakened at 3AM by Henry's cries to God as he knelt by his bunk and prayed for all of us, calling us by name. Though Henry continued praying every night, his voice never woke me up again. Within 2 years, I was born again. I thank God for Hollywood! Rev. Dr. Gene Alley

Oh what a lasting impression Henry gave to everyone. I will always remember that beautiful smile that radiated and brightened everyone's day. Henry was such a positive and energetic person he will be sorely missed. He certainly raised the standard on appearance and dress... always with dignity and respectful to all people. My sincere condolences to his family may his memory continue to encourage you and brighten your days ahead.

I C O N I C! ...even this does not fully address the barring Henry had on his friends, family, Church, and community. Henry could match every color in the rainbow when it came to the way he dressed. He probably invented the phrase 'Dress to Impress.' There are very few people in this world that everybody loved; Henry is counted among them. A part of Shelby's black culture passed away with him. Ok, let's talk about his smile, his gigantic, come here and give me a hug smile. He always welcomed you with open arms. A few years back, it was his mother's birthday, and Henry invited me to go to dinner and celebrate it with them. What an honor. Once, when I had totaled my car in Texas, my nephew (Nikao) and I had to catch the bus back home. One evening I was walking home from work, and Henry stopped to give me a ride. He said, "Brother Pete, what's wrong with your car?" Henry, I totaled my car last week. Without missing a beat, he replied, "Brother Pete WE can always get another car, but we can't get another Pete." Notice, he didn't say (you can get another car). He said, "WE, (inclusive) ...can get another car." That's another hallmark of his: inclusive; if he had it, you had it! Missing you much, my main man, ...missing you much! ...till we meet again, my friend, love ya, Brother Pete!

Henry, we met through my brother, Andre Mack some years ago. The one thing that will always stand out from our first meeting, was the outfit you had on that day. You knew you were the most "fly" dresser in the state. That day I gave you a personal nickname, "CRAYOLA." You were clean and suited down, but you had on about 5 different colors. I said, "You dress your behind off, you clean as all get out, but why all those damn colors?" You smiled that big beautiful smile of yours and stated, "you know I look good." My response was you look like a box of crayons, and from then you have been Crayola to me. You came to visit us in ATL, cooked dinner for my birthday and we all enjoyed you and the meal. I believe I can speak for all of us, "We will truly miss you and that genuine smile." πŸ’” Mama, Tetra, Andre, Mitzi and Ken

Grief has a strange way of rearranging time. We assume there will always be another conversation, another laugh, and another opportunity to say what needs to be said. Then suddenly, memory is asked to carry what presence once held.

That is where I find myself after the sudden passing of my bonus dad, Rev. Henry "Hollywood" Clark.

I come from a people who understand the sacred power of memory. Our ancestors taught us to call the names of those who came before us, tell their stories, and carry something of them forward. So I refuse to reduce Henry's life to the day he died. I will remember his laughter, the lessons, the moments we shared, and what his life planted in me.

As a preacher, I have spent much of my life proclaiming that death does not have the final word. Now I must preach that same gospel to myself. This loss hurts more than words can adequately express, but I still believe what our people have believed through many a dark night: somewhere beyond this present midnight, morning is coming.

Rest well in power, Hollywood. Thank you for being my bonus dad. I love you, and I will see you in the morning.

And in the words of Shakespeare, "Good night, sweet prince, and may flights of angels sing thee to thy rest."

My dear brother, both our father and maternal grandfather, John Henry, were well dressed men who passed the torch to you. As such, all of you family men provided me the eye and attraction for a well dressed man. These and other fond memories of you comfort me. My Bible tells me that you are going to your memorial tomb ("grave") to wait for your resurrection to see us again (John 5:28-29). -M.
