Obituary For John Hoey

Mr. John Edward Hoey, 71, departed this life for his eternal home on Monday, October 3, 2022 at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home in Charlotte Hall, Maryland. He was born on December 25, 1950 in Cleveland County, NC to the late Arthur Edward Hoey and Nellene Briscoe Hoey.

John graduated from Burns High School in 1968 where he was an active athlete. After graduation he attended Piedmont Community College and later entered the U.S. Army for his first tour of duty which started in Germany. After receiving an Honorable Dischargehe enjoyed a brief time as a civilian but eventually re-enlisted for a second term in the Army as a Special Purpose Equipment Admin Specialist serving at Ft. Bragg, NC. His second tour ended due to a disability on April 29, 1976.He returned home and attended Cleveland Technical Institute and started his career as a car salesman. He later moved to Atlanta, Ga where he continued in that field. Although he was well travelled, Shelby was always his heart and home.

John is best remembered for his genuine personality, his love of sports and sports cars, and his ability to debate with the best.He enjoyed meeting new people and was quick to make friends. He was also a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan and took great pleasure in their victories and completely ignored their defeats. John was also somewhat of a car aficionado, particularly when it came to the Corvette. He studied those unfailingly and was the “go to man” when there were questions about it. John also enjoyed regular conversation but he excelled at discussions and was well-versed in many subjects.

John’s family and friends were important to him,especially his children. He loved to talk about his son and daughters and was extremely proud of all of them. He had a way with the younger generation and his nieces and nephews enjoyed listening to his stories due to his wonderful sense of humor. He was known as the “funny” uncle and they loved him for it.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, John and Amanda Hoey and his maternal grandmother Virginia Briscoe Stroud and his grandfathers, John Otis Brown and Usher Stroud, his brothers Larry Milton and Charles Ervin Hoey, a daughter Alicia Eaves, and a nephew, Kalon Goldring. He leaves to cherish his memory his mother, two daughters, Tabatha Hoey and Angela Craig, one son, Corey Johnson, a brother, Robin Hoey, four sisters, Cheryl Sowell (Charles), Janice Hoey-Jackson, Kimberly Hoey-Goldring, Teresa Thompson(Gary), eight grandchildren, Justice Wilson, Gavonte, Janiya and Kendall Craig, Gabriella and Abigail Johnson, two great-grandchildren,Alonna and Promiise Wilson, six nieces, Shanay Ramseur, Cameo Reeves, Kristia Hayes, Kashya Daniel, Keya Chavies, Kyia Thompson, fournephews, Rhian Jackson, Kentry Kinard, K’von Kinard, Jordan Hoey and a host of aunts, uncles, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 11, 2022 at 12:00 Noon at Shoal Creek Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until 12:00 Noon at the church.
