Mrs. Josephine (Culbreth) Dagraca, 89, passed away on Saturday, August 21, 2021 at Northside Hospital Cherokee in Canton, Georgia. She was born on February 16, 1932 in Cowpens, SC to the late Andrew Culbreth and the late Gertrude Tory Culbreth.
Maternal grandparents Joseph โBusโ and Goudie Lou (Letts) Tory, paternal grandparents, Manuel and Emaline Williams Culbreth. Josie grew up in Shelby, NC with many relatives and friends. She resided in the Flat Rock community on Anthony St., and lived at 211 Cora St. She attended Cleveland High School and Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, singing soprano in the school glee club and the church choir.
After graduation Josie moved to Providence, Rhode Island where she received her beautician license and worked for The State of Rhode Island Childrenโs Service and the Medical Center. She was a member of Congdon Street Baptist Church where she continued to sing in the church choir.
Following retirement, she joined her son and his family in Canton, GA. She leaves to cherish her loving memories her devoted son, Aires Dagraca and his wife Leesa of Canton, GA, her only surviving sister Bonnie Stevenson of Providence, and grandchildren who she adored: Aires Dagraca Jr. of Mcdonough, GA, Yakeisa Roberts, Providence, Aires Dagraca Adams of Tuscaloosa, AL, Rebecca Berg of Berlin Germany, Alex, Alexia, Jocilyn, of Canton; many great grands and great-great grandchildren. Auntie of many nieces and nephews including; Bobby, Michael (Betty), David (Sherry), and Melinda Burson, Sonya Nichols all of Shelby, Mary Canty, Nadine Culbreth, Dorothy Moore, Gloria Carmichael (Michael), Robert Canty, all of Detroit, Shawnee Biggs and Cedrick Culbreth of New York. She was preceded in death by her late brothers and sisters Lizzie Mae Canty, William Culbreth, James Culbreth, Frank Culbreth, Shirley Woods, Clara Burson, Homer Lee and baby Culbreth. She also leaves a host of relatives and friends.
The funeral service for Mrs. Dagraca will be held on Saturday, September 4, 2021 at 11:00 AM at S.T. Enloe Memorial Chapel. The service will be livestreamed on FaceBook starting at 10:45 AM. The family will receive friends from 10:30 AM until 11:00 AM at the chapel and other times at 1632 Friendship Road. Burial will take place at Sunset Cemetery.
To Auntie Bonnie and Aires Sr and Family. We here in RI offer our sincere and loving condolences to you and all the family. Aunt Josephine was a joy to have in our lives. We had known her since we moved to RI and then we became family through marriage (Uncle Louis & Aunt Bonnie). She was a beautiful and caring person. We will never forget her. Aires Sr. & JR. and the Dagraca Family, we want to express our deepest sympathy on hearing that Josephine passed recently. Growing up with Aires Sr., I was always welcome in her home, as she was another mother in the neighborhood that keep us kids in line.
