Lula Lois Wray Schenck was born on April 12, 1925 in Lawndale, NC to the union of Herbert Wray and Choicie Mae Wray Curry. This beloved matriarch departed this life at the beautiful age of 97 on Tuesday, September 27, 2022 in the loving presence of family in Johns Island, SC.
Ms. Schenck attended Douglas High School where she met her husband of 42 years, Warren G. Schenck. From that union, they were blessed with one daughter and six sons. Before becoming a wife and mother, she was a skillful basketball player – achieving a number of accolades. She continued to have a love for the game and faithfully cheered on her Duke Blue Devils. She was a dedicated wife and mother, preparing biscuits from scratch to accompany a hearty breakfast for the family before disappearing in the fields of the family business.
Ms. Schenck was a member of Philadelphia United Methodist Church where she was a missionary, sang on the choir, and served on the kitchen committee. Food was Ms. Schenck’s love language. Known for her chicken and dumplings, chicken hash (a recipe passed down from her mother), Sun Drop cake and chocolate delights, she loved bringing her family and friends together for an annual Christmas Eve dinner.
After the closing of the family farm, Ms. Schenck went to work at JP Stevens. Not being one to sit still, she retired on two occasions. She retired first from Fiber Industries. The true finale came when she left Alpha Mailing. This true retirement gave her time for macrame, traveling with family and friends, games and conversation at the senior center, and wearing out the DVD of her favorite movie, The Temptations. One can’t forget her love for word search. Ms. Schenck would go through 3 – 4 books a week. The thing she never had to search for though was the love of her family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Schenck; son, William Schenck; great-granddaughter, Ayrnn Schenck; siblings, Ella Hughley, Charles Wray, Hubert Raper and Roger Curry; a daughter-in-law, Larine Schenck and a son-in-law, Isaac Robinson, Jr.
She leaves a legacy of fond memories to her children, Gene Schenck, Sr. and Frank Schenck (Patricia) both of Lawndale, NC, Charles Schenck (Betty) of Hickory, NC, Donald Schenck (Edahlia) of Lawndale, Evelyn Robinson of Johns Island, SC and Sherrill Schenck (Venita) of Shelby, NC; one brother, Eddie Curry (Dorothy) of Philadelphia, PA; one sister, Kathleen Wills of MD; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Jean Curry of MD and Patricia Schenck of Oakland CA and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 3, 2022 at 1:30 PM at Philadelphia United Methodist Church. Burial will take place at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 1:30 PM at the church on Monday and at other times at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Sherrill and Venita Schenck, 3407 Fallston Rd. Shelby. The service will be live streamed from the Enloe Mortuary Facebook page starting at 1:15 PM.

Momma Lois never met a stranger. She had an open, loving heart and her wonderful NC kindness. When I met Evelyn, we became friends (best). She lovingly shared her family with me. Momma Lois took me in over 30 years ago as one of her own. I still remember the day were in Evelyn's kitchen on Johns Island and Momma Lois showed me how to make chicken and dumplings. You don't cut the dough but tear off the dumpling and toss into the pot. Momma Lois could cook, but then all the NC women can fill a table with love. We will miss you dearly Momma Lois. Love always and forever. Charleen and Ron Shirley XOXOXO
