Mrs. Margaret Mintz Haynes, 100, of 839 Hardy Street, Shelby, NC, passed away on Monday, February 5, 2024, at Atrium Health Cleveland in Shelby, NC.
Margaret Mintz Haynes was born on December 22, 1923, in Shelby, NC to the late Berry and Pearl Doggett Mintz. She was the tenth of eleven children in her family. While growing up in the Shoal Creek community, she began a courtship with her future husband, (K.C. Haynes) at the tender age of 14. After her father decided that Mr. Haynes was spending too much time with his daughter, he forbade them from seeing each other. Undeterred, the young smitten couple decided to fix that dilemma by getting married on their own. Mrs. Haynes had just turned 15, when she became a young, beautiful bride, at the surprise of her parents. The devoted couple remained married for 66 years until his passing in 2005. From this union came four children: J.C., Brenda, Danny, and Charlene.
Mrs. Haynes believed in learning and improving oneself. She attended Cleveland High School during her youth and finished her formal education at Cleveland Technical College. In addition to being a wonderful homemaker, she was also employed with Fiber Industries for 28 years until her retirement. When she was not working, Mrs. Haynes enjoyed traveling extensively. Her travels included destinations such as Hawaii and even Europe. She had many hobbies. She enjoyed cooking, singing, reading, gardening and as an avid walker she believed in staying healthy. She also found pleasure in spending time with her special friends from the “Silver Fox Club” as they were so named by Dr. Isaac.
Mrs. Haynes was a lifelong member of Shoal Creek Baptist Church, where she was currently the oldest member of the church. As a dedicated member, she served in many capacities through the years. Some of those included, Sunday School teacher, Gospel Choir member, (Her special song that she led with the choir was “If God Said It, That Settles It”), Adult Missionary Department member, Kitchen Committee chairperson, Pastor’s Aide member and she was a former Mrs. Senior Shoal Creek and Woman of the Year. Mrs. Haynes had 75 years of dedicated service to her church. She loved the Lord and truly lived a life of faithfulness. Her favorite scripture was Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.”
Mrs. Haynes departed this life to live eternally with the Lord on February 5, 2024, at the age of 100 years young, after having lived a full life. Although she will be greatly missed, she leaves us with beautiful memories of her (our mom) and a legacy of love.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by all ten of her siblings, John Turner, T.K. Turner, Jacob Turner, Flossie Turner, Jennie Turner, Pearl Turner, Beulener Smith, Bessie Woods, George Turner and Pecola Maddox.
She leaves cherished memories to her children, J.C. Haynes (Delores) of Columbia, SC, Brenda Phillips (Paul) of Shelby, NC, Danny Haynes of Kings Mountain, NC and Charlene Haynes of Shelby, NC; four grandchildren, Jamie Phillips (Sofia) of Finland, Jeffrey Haynes of Columbia, SC, Katrice Thompson of Raleigh, NC and Candace Phillips of Shelby, NC; four great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Phillips of Indianapolis IN, Kaitlyn Chapman (Tyler) of Raleigh, NC, Joel Phillips of Las Vegas, NV and Kevin Phillips of Michigan; a special great-nephew, Phillip Mitchell of Shelby, NC; her special “Silver Fox” friends, Ruby Woods, Betty Nance, and Hattie Hall; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
