Ms. Mattie Lene Watkins Sloan entered into eternal rest on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at Wendover Hospice House in Shelby. She was born on April 3, 1936 in Athens, GA to the late George Watkins and the late Eloise Dillard Watkins and was their oldest child.
As the oldest child, Mattie was considered the matriarch of her family who was always there with her loving, kind spirit to help her family however she could. She was a hardworking working and industrious woman, who was employed with Cleveland Mills for over 30 years before retiring. As a devout Christian and praying woman, she was a member of Edwards Chapel Baptist Church.
Quiet and thoughtful, Mattie was a homebody who enjoyed cooking, reading and being around her family. As a no nonsense person, she set a standard of discipline and high standards for her children and expected them to succeed and excel in life.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brothers, George “June” Watkins, Jr., Von Watkins, Walter Watkins and Billy Watkins.
She leaves her memory to be cherished by her children, Patricia Sloan of Shelby and Anthony Sloan (Bonita) and Charlene Sloan both of Charlotte, NC; one sister, Corine Whisnant also of Charlotte; six grandchildren, Alexis Shanta Norris of Shelby, Anthony Sloan, II of Nashville, TN, Bryce Sloan of Pensacola, FL, Kaylan Sloan and Kendall Sloan both of Logoff, SC and Jerica Brown of Dallas, TX; six great-grandchildren, Taniya Norris-Walker, Jayden Wray, Malaysia Parks, Rosalyn Sloan, Zoie Sloan and Robyn Sloan and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at 12:30 PM at Edwards Chapel Baptist Church. Burial will take place at the church cemetery. The service will be livestreamed from the Enloe Mortuary FaceBook page starting at 12:15 PM. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until 12:30 PM at the church on Saturday.
