Mr. SS Howell, 85, of 1940 Cherryville Road in Cherryville, NC passed away on Thursday, July 9, 2020 at Carolina Care Center in Cherryville. He was born in Cleveland County, NC on January 21, 1935 to the late Rev. Fred L. Howell and Gertrude Roberts Howell.
A native of Cleveland County, he worked as a cook on Southern Coastal and Seaboard trains while attending JC Smith University. He earned his Master’s in Engineering at Johnson C. Smith University. He retired from Lithium Corporation in 1998 as a Laboratory Chemist. He served in the Army for 10 years receiving a National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was the Legend Master wash pot fish fryer which was one of his favorite hobbies along with going to Nascar races. Richard Petty #43 was his favorite race car driver. He loved listening to football, baseball and basketball on the radio. Most of all, he was a family man to his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
SS was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church since a youth where he joined under the leadership of his father, the late Rev. Fred L. Howell. As a member, he served on the deacon board for many years.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Vernice C. Howell; two daughters, Marcia McKissick (the late Keith McKissick) of Waco, NC, Donna H. Charles (Donald) of Gastonia, NC; two sons that preceded him in death, Christopher Samuel Columbus Howell and James Larry Howell, Sr.; six grandchildren, Sharika Howell (Travalis), Shantineya Howell, Ryan Howell (Candra), James Larry Howell, Jr., Darius Howell (Kelly), Niajah Clark; four great-grandchildren and a host of nieces nephews, other relatives and friends.
The funeral service for Mr. Howell will be private. A reception of friends will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2020, at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Waco, NC. from 2:00 PM until 2:30 PM. He will be placed in the church at 12:30 PM to begin viewing. Burial will take place at church cemetery.

So Sorry to hear of the passing of Mr.SS Howell. My Condolences to his Family. He was a very kind person to everyone. He was a fellow vendor at 321 in Dallas NC for many years.He was one of the few early black vendors. Mr.S displayed a stand up strong and honest work ethic and that always spoke for him. When I think of S.S. I think of family, farms, roosters, chickens, church, smiles, kindness, laughter, hard work, faith, service, determination, strong will, and oh yes, family gathering fish fries! He will be greatly missed.
