Ella was my cousin, and we had been very close friends since we were 7. My heart broke when I received the call informing me of her passing. Over the years, we have shared many experiences and supported each other through whatever life has put before us. I remember being 7 or 8 and playing at my grandmother's house on the steps or under the trees in front of her house. We used to sit and make mud pies and talk about what our lives would be like when we grew up. We spent hours on the phone talking when we were teenagers, and we would talk until our mothers made us get off the phone. We share secrets that we dare not tell anyone else.
It is with teary eyes that I recall us talking about jobs that we wanted and places that we wanted to live. I remember thinking thirty was very old, and we could not imagine our lives after thirty. However, after turning thirty, our kids played together and took turns sleeping at each other's houses. As we grew older, she moved away, and our jobs and daily routines made our daily phone calls turn into calls every couple of months or simple text messages. No matter how long the time between phone calls, our love and laughter were still there, as though we had not missed one day of conversation. Even though she is gone, my love for her will always remain. I will love Ella and miss her; my heart will be broken forever.
