MRS. ANNIE MAE THORNE SMITH, daughter of the late Henry James Thorne and Mary Bell Powell Thorne, was born May 3, 1944 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia and departed this life December 26, 2024 at VCU-CMH Hospital, South Hill, VA. She was also preceded by two siblings- Ida Mae Fisher and Annie Lee Thorne.
At an early age she was baptized at Gethsemane Baptist Church and later attended Free Union RZUA Church. She attended the Mecklenburg County Public Schools.
Annie Mae was employed as a Nurse’s Aide in North Carolina and later worked in the domestic field.
On May 4, 1987 she was married to the late Prince Edward Smith; who was known by many as “D J Prince.”
In her spare time, she loved to party, dance, and she was a great cook.
Annie Mae leaves to mourn a loving daughter- Barbara Jones (Mark Loyd), Bluffton, SC; 2 grandchildren- Lawanda (Robert) Milton and Latonya (Erick) Jones-Angel; 5 great-grandchildren; Godson- Alvin; 3 sisters- Lucinda T. Cook, LaCrosse, VA; Adeline “Lillie” (Brent) James, South Hill, VA and Mildred T. Chavis, Bracey, VA; In-laws, Cleo (Eddie) Hargrove, Clarksville, VA; Benjamin (Deborah) Smith, Greenfield, IN; Mary E. Spruill, Boydton VA; Teddy (Deborah) Smith, Petersburg, VA; Larry (Shirley) Smith, Boydton, VA; Regina (Byrd) Johnson, Greensboro, NC; Danny Smith, Danville, VA; Patricia Nettles, Pittsboro, NC and Aretha (George) Jones, Victoria, VA; devoted niece and caregiver and her family, Monalethia “Rockiel” Thorne of the home, and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
SING as if no one is listening. DANCE as if no one is watching. LOVE as if you have never been loved before. Annie Mae as you danced in the light with joy, love lifted you. As you brushed against this world so gently, you lifted us. Love is like a butterfly; it goes where it pleases and pleases wherever it goes.
