MR. CHARLIE LEE HAYES, affectionately called “Slick,” son of the late Joseph Lou and Esline Farrar Hayes was born March 21, 1946 in Mecklenburg County, VA and departed this life suddenly July 16, 2022 in South Hill, VA. He was also preceded in death by his siblings- Joseph Hayes, Jr., Eddie “Pee Wee’ Hayes, Treva Young, John (Delores) Hayes.
At an early age he was baptized and joined Sharon Baptist Church, South Hill, VA, where he made several charitable contributions. Slick was a graduate of the former East End High School and then followed his passion by attending Automotive School in Kenbridge, VA.
Upon graduating, he began working for General Motors for over 30 years where he then retired. After Slick graduated from Automotive School, he met his beloved wife Dorothy Wilson Hayes and then moved to New Jersey. To this union they lovingly raised five children.
Slick loved fishing and hunting and he would travel all over the nation to participate in fishing resorts and competitions with his son-in-law, Daryl Moore. Some of his favorite pastimes were watching sports, Animal Kingdom, playing cards and having family cookouts, making his one-of-a-kind mouthwatering ribs. Slick had a heart of gold and he was always willing to help everyone. If you were in need, you knew you could count on Slick to be there. He was a mentor and confidant to all his nieces and nephews who would confide in him.
Slick leaves to mourn nine children- Phyllis (Kendall) Johnson, Plainfield, NJ; Cynthia (Darryl) Hayes-Moore, Piscataway, NJ; Charlie Hayes, Jr. and Joel Hayes, Irvington, NJ; Chris Hayes, Levittown, PA; LaTwon Hutcheson, East Orange, NJ; Mike Hutcheson, Rahway, NJ; Marquis Brown, Chesapeake, VA, Markell Brown, Virginia Beach, VA; foster son- Mark Brown, Baskerville, VA; granddaughters- Laniece Hayes, Kyra Johnson, Darielle Moore, Kennedy Johnson; grandsons- Charlie Hayes, Lanier “MuMu” Hayes, Chris Murray, Maurice Hayes, and Aiden Brown; 5 great-grandchildren; 1 brother- Willie Pete Hayes, Baskerville, VA; 2 sisters- Mary (Glenn) Sheppard, Plainfield, NJ; Cora (Lloyd)Noel, Whitehouse Station, NJ; brother-in-law- Chris Alexander; aunt- Lola Conner, Plainfield, NJ; devoted cousins- Richard Farrar, Skeeter, Wardell and James Archer Whisonant ; devoted friends- Spencer Wilcoxson, Irvin Moore, Ryan Moore, Patricia Brown, late Lucinda Hutchinson, Beulah Gregory, Al White and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
