CYNTHIA WILLIAMS LANEY, daughter of the late Alice Murray and the late Willis “Bill” Williams, Jr. was born September 30, 1947, in Washington, DC and departed this life August 22, 2025, in Washington, DC surrounded by her loving family. She was also preceded in death by her sister- Deborah Williams.
She was a 1965 graduate of Paul L. Dunbar Senior High School, Washington, D.C.
On October 2, 1965, Cynthia married James Laney, Sr. and to this union a son, James Laney, Jr, was born.
After marriage Cynthia embarked on a career dedicated to serving her local community by working first a Book Clerk with John F. Cook School, originally opened for African American children during segregation before closing its doors in 2009. She later worked with C & P Telephone Company, then Bell Atlantic for 33 years. While working with Bell Atlantic, Cynthia enjoyed taking her grandchildren with her to work when it was a day dedicated to “take your child to work day” and she loved traveling all over the country.
Every August, Cynthia enjoyed attending her family reunions in South Hill, VA. Last year at the 65th Reunion, she received an award for the only family member that attended every reunion since 1959.
Cynthia’s stern, but generous spirit knew no bounds. She found great joy in being with other people and meeting new, kindred spirits, which led her to participate in many social groups. Her closet sandbox friends were still a very big part of her life, so we are grateful to Jenny, Gail, Shirley, Maria, Sarah, Deborah, Patricia, and Betty because you were all extremely precious to her and helped fill her life with joy. Later in her life, she connected with another set of friendship sisters who greatly touched one another’s hearts and lives- August, Teresa, and Patricia, you were truly like family.
Cynthia’s favorite past time was playing cards with her card club members. She also participated in water aerobics for many years, visiting her community pool several times per week for exercise. It was through this experience that she fostered a bond with Alexima, Bill, Floria, Fred, Leon, Maxine, and Patricia. She and her water aerobics group established a regular time for social outings after classes because of their dynamic friendship. She lived a full life, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew her. Her legacy of love and honesty will continue to inspire us all.
Cynthia leaves to cherish her memory: husband- James F. Laney, Sr.; son -James (Tonya) F. Laney, Jr.; Grandchildren-Varche J. (Deanna) Washington; Blaire W. Laney; James F. Laney, III; Great-grandchild- Kody B. Young; sister- Linda Williams; nieces- Kandace Saunders and Kristen Saunders and a host of loving relatives and dear friends.
