MR. DARRIS MONDELL COLEMAN, son of the late Lue Ethel Chavis Coleman and John Thomas Coleman, Jr., was born July 17, 1971 in Richmond, VA and departed this life suddenly at his residence on December 9, 2022. He was also preceded in death by a grandson- Tajir Tyshawn Hayes.
At an early age he was baptized and joined Gethsemane Baptist Church, South Hill, VA.
Darris was a 1989 graduate of Park View Sr. High School. After graduation he went to Culinary School and was ranked 5th in his class of many. He was employed by Golden Corral and lastly with Smiths.
He enjoyed life. In his spare time he adored fishing, watching his favorite team, the Dallas Cowboys and above all, cooking to show off his culinary skills. Darris was fast talking and fast walking. His favorite sayings were “I got cha,” “I’m Out,” and “I Love you girl.” Most of all he loved his grandchildren and his foster family- The Smiths.
Darris leaves to cherish his memories: three children- Darrius Hayes, South Hill, VA; Shontarris C. Hayes, Richmond, VA and Kyheim Hayes, South Hill, VA; eleven grandchildren; eight siblings- Edith (Oscar) Coleman-Mosely, South Hill, VA; Shalotta (John) Seward, Lynchburg, VA; Inze LaVern Coleman-Dillard, South Hill, VA; Johnathan (Denise) Coleman, LaCrosse, VA; Rana (Leroy) Pearson, White Plains, VA; Shawn Coleman, Lynchburg, VA; Marquette Coleman and Cheserdee Coleman-Perry, both of South Hill, VA; step-father, Andrew “Hard Time” Grant of the home; foster parents- Willie Bob and Edwina Smith, South Hill, VA; foster siblings- Justin (Amber) Smith and Merlissa Wright, South Hill, VA; seven aunts-Martha Salley, Linda Dixon, Ella Gray, Lattice, Sandra, Barbara and Pauline Chavis; two uncles- Albert and Charles Coleman; devoted friends- Renea Davis, Riddick “Ricky” Baskerville, Bill Jordan, Nelson and Carolyn Walker, and Bill Ferguson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
