Obituary: Deaconess Jo Ann Logan Avery, daughter of the late Emmanuel Logan and the late Cassie Valentine Logan Goldson was born on May 7, 1937 in Washington DC. She departed this life on October 19, 2021. Her siblings were Emmanuel, Doris, and William “Bill” who all preceded her in death.
She graduated from Cardozo High School in 1956. She would then move to New York where she worked for Colgate for 20 years. As an employee she purchased stock which helped her to purchase her first home in Washington DC. Now in DC she gave birth to her only son, Arnold Webster (Willard Webster his father) who preceded her in death. She also worked at FDIC where she later retired after 29 years of service.
On October 25, 1978, she married the love of her life Fletcher Avery. She would then move to Boydton, VA where they settled into country life. She would begin to expand her family circle through church friends. She accepted Christ as her savior incredibly early in life and served him faithfully. She later joined Penuel R.Z.U.A. Church where she was ordained as a Deaconess and she was a Sunday School Teacher. Jo Ann was an amazing woman. She was one of the most loving and caring mother, sister, cousin, and friend a person could ask for. She was a listening ear to many, a true confidant.
Jo Ann always made everyone feel welcomed at her home. Whenever someone came to visit, they always wanted to stay. She made everyone feel special. You could bet if you visited on the holidays there would be a gift for you even if she wasn’t expecting you.
Jo Ann leaves behind to cherish her memories her wonderful loving husband of 43 years- Fletcher Avery; one step-daughter, Bonnie Jones; two grand-daughters, Arnise and Aunyee, two great grandchildren- Amire and Tieye’, devoted friend- Griscilda Tate, and a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and other friends.
A message from Jo Ann, “I love you more” and always remember “The joy of the Lord is my strength”. Nehemiah 8:10
